what type of system are you running on? something with multi-cores? I just checked my single core box and its  using only 117megs with most patterns on under 15 mbit/sec of traffic sustained.

Its an old p4 with dual procs that I dust off for beta testing[:D] But its only running one instance of snort and that is why I filed the FYI. I am not experiencing any reduced throughput but as you can see with screenshots, its already swapping with 18 minute uptime[:(] 

 did you try recycling ips?

I'm using an old ASG120 with 800MHz and 1GB RAM. Snort is using 20% RAM and when snort will be restarted, system load is very high for many minutes until all patterns are loaded. 
But both issues are IMHO quite normal for snort with about 6700 Patterns loaded.
Btw depending on your amount of CPUs you have several snort instances running in parallel: 
snort instances = CPU -1

Thanks for the input snowcrash. The reason for the FYI was not that I couldn't fix the problem. I was just pointing out that in my case after the up2date was installed, the machine came back up with snort using a lot of ram which it shouldn't do. I have since restarted IPS and the usage has gone back down.
