[7.490][INFO] Wierd Default DHCP options

I don't use dhcp at home (ppoe client) but I have the option of setting dchp in my modem to pass the live IP to astaro NIC. That way I am not double natting and keep the ppoe on the modem. It works great like this all the time and I set my external NIC as dhcp modem.

Anyways, I restarted astaro this morning for some reason and when it came up it had really high times for dhcp defaults. I guess for some reason (IPS?) the dhcp client couldn't fully get all the parameters of the lease and it assumed certain numbers for lease times etc. Usually these numbers are supposed to be low so the server can be queried again fairly soon for lease times but in my case these numbers are huge.

Do these defaults really matter when the DHCP returns a DHCPNAK?

The address for broadcast (0.255.255.255) is also nonsense [;)]

I googled, but could not find a definition of DHCP_NAK or the reason for DHCP to send a NAK. Can anyone point us at a good primer for DHCP?

Actually my connection had stopped working that is the only reason I even looked at the logs and noticed the numbers. I have never seen this before on any system (windows/linux) thats why I opened it as a info thread. Toggling the network off/on fixed the whole thing but I put it just as an FYI so that I could get some feedback from you guys[:)]

Good morning,

you should look closer at the text [:$]

If the client has previously had a DHCP assigned IP address and it is restarted, the client will specifically request the previously leased IP address in a special DHCPREQUEST packet. The Source address is 0.0.0.0 and the Destination is the broadcast address 255.255.255.255. Microsoft clients will populate the DHCP Option Field DHCP: Requested Address with the previously assigned address. Strictly RFC compliant clients will populate the CIADDR Field with the address requested. The Microsoft DHCP server will accept either.

At this point, the server may or may not respond. The behavior of the Windows NT DHCP server depends on the version of the operating system being used as well as other factors such as superscoping. If the server determines that the client can still use the address, it will either remain silent or ACK the DHCPREQUEST. If the server determines that the client cannot have the address, it will send a NACK.
