the Astaro can surely scan for windows and all other viruses like bootsector, worms trojans and other malware.  
We use a complete AV scan engine with ten's of thousends of patterns, it is even able to analyze Office documents. 

We integrate the engine from a german vendor called Avira, which scored best in the recent, independent AV engine comparison:

I run a Ubuntu box with no AV and feel better knowing that the Astaro box is scanning for Linux viruses as well.  I thought that since many vendors make a Linux AV, that the ther version of Avira used in Astaro may only scan for Windows viruses.

Is there a test Linux Virus?

I will post my version from now on.

Sorry guys but I am probably confused around that topic. My impression was that different av products protect different things (ie. Avast linux version protects linux systems and avast windows version protects against windows virus and the same for MAC )

How come our Avira /claim engine protects against windows, Mac and linux virus as well? 

C68 as far as I know there is not test virus against linux.

Hi All, 

yes it does, it will detect linux viruses once there are available patterns.

Nowadays the AV engines for different platforms share the same patternbase. The modern AV engines brings everything to evaluate a file with it. This way it is able to analyze office documents on linux even if MS office is not installed. 

Most of the time the AV engine first analyzes the type of the file 'windows executable', 'linux executable','office document' and than matches only the relevant patterns against it.

Thank you for the detailed info.

I am glad that it does scan for viruses for Linux.  Not that Linux has a ton of viruses, but it makes me feel a bit safer knowing there is some AV scanning going on for my Ubuntu box, even if it is just the stream into it.
