7.306 Patch Notes

To my understanding, there are no bug fixes in 7.306.  It will give some sort of notification about their new memory upgrade program if your system has consistently high memory usage.  It looks to be mostly for those with 110 or 200 series boxes or equivalent.  This is in preparation for the release of 7.400, which apparently won't run well with less than 1GB memory.

That depends on how many features you actually turn on and how much you stress the unit. v7.400 may run very well even with 512MB memory if you don't activate all those memory-consuming features (IPS is a good example).

To reinforce this, it is completely possible that if your device is already not stressed overly, that 7.400 will also just just fine. The upgrades are optional and *not* required for continue support/warranty/operation. We just took this opportunity to allow for more life out of the existing appliances that could benefit from more memory instead of just end-of-lifing them and forcing new model upgrades on our customers or leaving them behind feature wise. It also allows for owners of some older 1xx/220 appliances a cheaper path to obtain the latest revisions.

So while you are free to upgrade, and 7.400 would run best in many environments with 1024mb of ram, it is not mandatory.

Yeah, I've been testing the 7.400 betas on 512MB equipped machines on purpose, to determine how well it will work for customers of mine that are on older 220 or 1x0 units.  I think if you don't turn on extra features, like the https content scanning, it'll be fine... turn them on, and you'll need 1GB... I'll probably have several customers that will take advantage of the upgrade opportunity.

Ther's a lot of confusion about it, and more users, like me think why we have to pay for memory upgrade when we just pay gold/platinum support! I think will be right make the appliance change like RMA...

From our business side, we have a chance to add new things that you (our users) request into the product, and allow it to grow in capability. This comes with a price of increased hardware requirements in some cases, especially on units at the lower end. While gold and platinum support do give you the ability to get updates and keep the installation running, we faced a choice at Astaro with how to do this.

We could have made 7.400 version 8, and end of lifed the units we deemed underpowered, forcing an upgrade significantly more costly on our customers that wanted all the new features. 
Instead we chose to provide as many paths as we could to allow users at a low cost to get some more room on their units. I'll use apple as an example if I may. You buy a macbook, with the applecare plan, and you can get osx updates for that version, and repair the model you have. That being said, a shiny new aluminum-macbook is a full-cost upgrade, theres no trade-in or upgrade path offered by apple. In the same manner, if you want the latest OSX version when they launch a new version, you pay for it, and/or maybe need to add more HD, Ram, or otherwise upgrade your existing unit, at your cost.

We mixed it a bit, in allowing ANYONE to download and install 7.400, and in using the same 7.300 features your load likely won't increase at all. However, giving our customers the freedom of being able to turn on any of the new features, regardless of ram size is a choice we give to them (based on the current usage of the unit, this may be just fine, or may not be the best choice) and also give them the freedom to purchase upgrades that give them more life yet out of their original investment, and/or smooth operations or add more users behind the appliance. In the end, someone that purchased an 895 dollar unit over 3+ years ago can still use our latest goodies today, 3 major versions later! Thats quite impressive imo, especially in the hardware marketplace.

We tried to offer all the benefits for the customer; we WANT everyone on the latest version, and with the ability to enjoy our features and new things. These upgrades really are for our customer-base, not a way for us to generate revenue.

Hopefully we hit the mark on this. Any comments you have, keep them coming so I can ensure the right options are available in the future as well.
