DHCP range, static dhcp assignments?

Does the specified range of the dhcp server need to include the manually assigned static dhcp assignments, or must they not overlap? It's not clear from the help/manual.

I have the dhcp server range overlapping my static assignments because I thought maybe they had to be included, and then when a new machine joined there was a conflict. So it appears they must not overlap. Is that correct? Can someone on the inside confirm this? If they must not overlap then it would be good to point that out in the manual.

I've tried so many UTMs recently that I don't remember which one it was, but one of them needed to have the static assignments included in the server range or the static assignments didn't work. Though I know with most devices they must not overlap.
