[NOTABUG] [7.350] When manually setting duplex/speed for NIC, 1000baseT not available

Dear Dev Team,

I'm currently testing the 7.350 beta for you, and configuring it on a HP Proliant with a total of 4 gigabit NIC's installed.  

As Cisco always recommends that for servers/routers/etc that you never rely on "Auto Detect" for speed/duplex settings on important devices, and should instead manually configure these settings, I've tried to do so under...

>> Network >> Interfaces >> Hardware

The "Supported link modes" for each card is reported correctly in the list of NIC's (including "1000baseT/half,1000baseT/full"), but if I click [Edit] on one of them, uncheck the "Auto negotiation" option, and try to choose 1000baseT/full duplex from the available options, I find that only 10 and 100mbit choices are available.  

This result is the same for all 4 NICs - the menu just doesn't want me to be able to choose gigabit speeds.

Could this be a minor UI bug?

    Can anyone else with gigabit adaptors confirm this is happening for them? It's a clean install of 7.350 with no restore of previous backup- was just in the process of configuring the software for it's new server....

    Hi,

    this is not a bug, but you are right that you can't set the link type to 1000baseT/full or half), so it's intended behaviour.

    As far as I could figure out, you have to activate 'auto negotiation' to met up with the specification, and it's also best practice. Of course you could deactivate the auto-neg option, but there won't be any guarantee that it will work for 1000baseT/full in the end. That's also the reason, why we don't offer this for configuration.

    By the way, the reason why you can see 1000baseT/full in the list, is that your card is capable of this option,  irrespective of a working setup or not.

    Thanks for clarifying that... The Cisco training is still focussed around the 10/100baseT standards, and highlights that the "auto negotiation" is hit and miss at best between different manufacturers, so they advocate that servers, switches, etc all have their link speed/duplex configured manually to avoid duplex mismatch...

    Will keep tinkering and see if I can find anything else that's useful to you.
