I attempted to install Astaro 7.350 using the .ISO (ssi-7.350-081120-2.iso), onto a VmWare virtual machine (VmWare Server 1.0.6), and the install fails. The install just says "Installation Failed" after attempting to detect hardware. Also before I get to the blue installation screen I notice a warning message "warming: can't open /etc/mtab: No such file or directory"
Can anybody tell me what are the parameters for creating the base of the virtual machine? How many disks in what size and so on?
I don´t have any ASL for now in a VMWare so I can´t look to the needs.
The original ASG Virtual Appliance uses one 30 GByte SCSI disk, so I'm using the same configuration for my manual installations. It will partition it by itself during the installation.
OK, so I set up a stand alone system on an IBM 326 server and was able to get it up running no problem. Then I decided to test it in VMWARE Server 2.0 running on an Ubuntu 8.10 Server Host OS. I created the VMWARE in VMWARE server. I gave it 512 MB of RAM 8 GB of HD space (I have since increased the size to 12 GB) and 2 CPUs. When I "power on" the VM booting from the asg-7.350-081120-2.iso that I had previously used to do the stand alone, I get as far as the detecting hardware and then the install fails and it asks to remove the CD and reboot.
Is this a bug with VMWARE or Astaro or gasp... User error?
EDIT: I should have been more patient. After it finally started again with the disk size set to 12 GB installation worked. Would have been nice to know why it originally failed besides just "installation failed"
I reported the installation error message problem in another thread. I found that I needed a 10GB HD otherwise you get the "installation failed" message. It should tell you why it failed.
