You can configure some PPPoE interfaces and use them together with upload balancing feature. Optionally you can create your own balancing roules, e.g. to stick vpn traffic to one connection.

MLPPP and uplink balancing basically have the same final goal which is use two Internet Uplinks simultainiously and share the load.

MLPPP does that by using a balancing inside the PPP protocol. this needs to be allowed/supported by the ISP, which is not very common. The benefit of this solution is, that both DSL connections share the same ip adress and spread the load evenly. The drawback is, that you can only balance PPP connections and also only with the same ISP. In terms of redundancy, this does not help you.

Uplink balancing moves the logic into the ASG with the same goal, use two internet uplinks to increase throughput and reliability. The uplink loadbalancing decides for each connection if it should go out uplink 1 or uplink 2. Once this decision is made, all connections from this SRC ip will go out the same interface.

The rules which define which connections go out which interface are configurable. This means you can bind a VoIP connection on uplink 2, where you split SMTP outbound on a per connection basis and so on.
Outbound connections will appear with different source ip addresses, depending on which interface has been selected.
The big benefit here is redundany as you can combine a DSL connection with a Cable modem, it is than very unlikly that both connections fail and the integrated logic will autmaticaly fail over all connections to uplink2 if uplink 1 fails.

I agree that MLPPP is not very common, however many independant ISP's are beginning to actively support this in Canada. Many users are deploying MLPPP routers to obfuscate traffic between themselves and the ISP (privacy concerns due to the nature of DSL agreements between smaller ISP's and Bell Canada).

It is for this reason I made a request to see if would be possible to add MLPPP support to the Astaro firewall.

This is the exact reason I would like to see it as well. Teksavvy, among others, has implimented MLPPP because it bypasses the Bell Canada throttling of Torrent traffic for one.

If some independant users on DSLReports.com can take the tomato firmware and modify it for MLPPP for Linksys routers, surely Astaro can do it too [:)]

Heck, throttling of torrent traffic is one issue. Deep Packet Inspection is against the law based on the Canadian privacy act. Bell claims they are simply using DPI to identify and throttle traffic, but with this hardware running they have access to all of our private communications.

I think the next step for the independent ISP's is to offer VPN tunnels to their clients, but MLPPP is what we have for now.
