Hey hey,


It would be great to see support for reverse dns lookup's.
You can define static dns entries now, but there is no graphical way to add a reverse one.

Also it would be great to see a frontend to configure the proxy (memory cache size, disk cache size, refresh patterns).

    i think its good to configure caching times for file extentions/mine-types. for example, cache every js, css, gif, jpg, png for 30 days, every zip, exe from M$ for 60 days, do not cache html/php/cgi
     
    so you have a good way to cache servicepacks and images. this data will be everytime the same and for statistic images you can exclude it from cache.

    Yep, thats why i would like to see a frontend to the proxy's refresh patterns.
    I love to cache 100% of microsoft, doubleclick e.t.c. e.t.c.

    Right now i need a downstream proxy to cache items the way i would like.
    But the downside is the diskspace. In the standard (software) appliance, astaro doesnt partition so well in the setup.

    / 5.5GB
    /Boot 350MB
    /var/Storage 3.7GB
    and /var/log grows to 100% cover the resulting disk space.

    Most logical would be in /var/storage. But there isnt a lot of space available in there.
    I know from squid, that it can easilly grow up to 20GB before you will notice major advantage of it.
    Better would be, to make /var/log a static size (750MB?) in the setup, and let /var/storage grow all the way.

    I don't think dhcpd needs to talk to bind for dynamic dns to work; I believe the clients talk directly to the nameserver (bind), assuming of course that bind is configured to support that.

    If you would like to have dynamic reverse dns pointers, you have to let dhcpd talk with named over rndc.

    I think you are confusing two things. How the dns entries comes in the DB of named, and clients querieing it.

    It is possible to automaticly update the named database for normal and reverse entries by dhcp.
    This happens when the client requests a new ip from dhcp. Dhcpd will send a command with the ip and hostname to named (over rndc), and that information will update the named DB.

    Now i have to set static dhcp entries, to have dns resolving working within my local network (if you dont set static entries, samba / windows nfs will resolve the hostname).

    The point is, I have some laptops connecting to the gateway over wireless network (wifi). Their ip changes a lot if i use dhcp, so it is hard to access them over the network. Solution to this right now, is to make there ip lease static, and add manual normal and reverse dns entries to access them with a hostname.

    And for the dev-vers who are working on the frontend, i have just another 'would be nice' request...

    Options to enable tftp globally, to specify networks where it is allowed on and to specify the tftp boot server would be a great add-on to the dhcp page [;)]
