Feature Requests [FEATURE]

Hi, I'd really like to see the following features:

1. Recent RealTek gigE drivers (ticket number 00071010)

2. CPUSpeed or other power-saving tools, _at least_ available from the command-line, WITH a working configuration for common AMD and Intel CPUs (and VIA if applicable).

3. WireShark (TShark) installed.
It's _really_ hard or impossible to compile tshark statically on another machine, making it impossible for end-users to 'hack in'.

4. IPTraf installed. This is much nicer than iftop... for one thing, it can show traffic on all interfaces at once.

5. Update the HCL document... it is severely out of date. Maybe it should be on a wiki so end-users can report what they are running successfully.

6. 'Developer' tools (like the old pluspack). Especially if #3 above isn't going to happen, users need some basic documentation for building their own add-ons.
Saying it's based on SUSE isn't enough; there are so few libraries installed on Astaro, it's impossible to get a Suse version of TShark to run.

7. Documentation / integration with other systems. AFAICS, syslog is currently the only supported way to get data out of Astaro (ignoring SNMP for the moment).
Some others I can think of that might be nice:
Using Barnyard to send IPS alerts to another system (this is may be easy enough by modifying the barnyard config, but I haven't tried lately. Last time I did try something like this, the mysql drivers weren't built-in to snort or barnyard on ASL).

Integration with network monitoring systems (NMS) such as Nagios, ZenOSS, Zabbix, Hyperic, ...
For example, I'd like to be alerted if a VPN connection goes down. Obviously, I can do that at the network level, but it requires lots of "sensors" setup, whereas if this information could be grabbed from Astaro via SNMP or something, that would be nice.
I'm guessing the info may be in SNMP, but istm it needs to be better described / documented.

Personally, setting up ACC to monitor one production system seems silly if I already have a NMS setup.

Speaking of ACC, after completing today's ACC survey, it appears that ACC may not alert on everything, further necessitating NMS integration.
Also, SMS is kind of silly as a "feature" at least in the U.S., as almost any phone has an email address which is the same as sending an SMS. However, one must realize that the text limit is very short on SMS, so anything that sends emails needs to have a concise summary at the top of the email.


8. Nested groups (unless this was already fixed).

9. Ability to print out configuration. v6 was bad, but v7 seems downright impossible to easily print out the definitions, PF Rules, etc.
A simple summary page for each section might be one way to accomplish this.
If ACC makes this easier, than this needs to be clearly pointed out. I didn't realize that ACC was free until recently; I assumed it was an upsell like ARM.


10. Rollback on up2dates. My understanding is RPM fully supports rollbacks already (of course that still leaves the configuration changes).


I realize it's probably too late for some of the above to get into 7.3, but I hope they will all at least be considered for future versions.


Quick rant: pricing - Astaro really should put pricing information on their website. the PCI product looks useful to me, but if I just assume it's really expensive, I won't pursue it.
I'm sure you're losing LOTS of potential customers who come to your website, can't find prices, and give up.
Furthermore, lots of people have complained here that emailing Astaro for pricing is unproductive. I had that experience at least once as well.
I'm not sure what Astaro thinks they're gaining by trying to keep the prices secret, but my guess is they're losing even more.
