DNS - dropped over 10,000 packets & Skype

Any chance it was a DNS reflection attack?

I don't think so. Normally after a re-start I will get a 20 or 30 packets from each of the top level DNS, but this was unbelievable.

I will try again tomorrow when I have the ASG to myself for a while.

I just restarted my ASG and dropped over 7000 packets from the DNS servers. See attached jpeg.

It does sound like somethings badly wrong... maybe you could do a tcpdump...

I've seen similar when my 2k3 server DNS was doing recursive queries.

the Primary DNS rejection only occurs at re-start, so I don't think I would have much time to setup a tcpdump before everything settles down.

Named is starting before a rule to allow DNS is added to the chains.

Hi,
having installed v7.185 and let the system settle down for a day or two I decided to try out the restart.
Powered the ASG off using the webadmin menu.
Powered back on.

Result over 7000 packets from the primary DNSs dropped. Throws the days traffic and blocked stats.

Same issue.

Maybe the dual processor is starting some processes out of order?

Think I have identified the source of the problem.While investigating why my ISP provided ATA while using the same time source fqn as the ASG, it was getting a totally different address.
All the answers came from the root DNS. It would appear that the ISP has too close a relationship with the root DNS or a configuration error that is bypassing their own DNS.
