HTTP Proxy Cache

Hi TXGARobert,

can you post a bit more information about your setup? How many users are using the proxy, what's your configuration (especially virus scanning, etc). Is the proxy constant slow with caching, or only at specific times? can you login to your ASG as loginuser, and post the output of 'top' when it is slow?

I can't give you an exact number of users because the license is "Unlimited" and does not provide a number.

At any given time, there are 12 sites that connect to the internet through this box, roughly 1000-2000 possible computers accessing the internet.

v6, a/v, cache worked great, no slowdowns, ever.

v7, a/v, IPS, IM/P2P, cache, painfully slow

v7, a/v, no cache, works great, not seeing any slowdowns.

Out of all the things I have tried, and after yesterday I tried them all at once, nothing made any difference until I turned off the http proxy cache.

Yesterday, IPS was on, IM/P2P was on, the cache was on, and it was painfull to use.
This morning I turned off all except the cache, still painfully slow.

Once I turned off the cache, instant response, everything went back to normal.

Yesterday when I would shell in and monitor the TOP, it looked to me to be just sitting there idling.

can you try if 7.090 improves caching for you? There were several changes that should improve caching. If 7.090 is still slow on your box, is it possible to get access to that box, and a time window where we can enable caching, so we can get an idea why it is so slow?

7.090 is installed,  I'll turn it on and see.

Cache is back on, and it is noticeably slower, but not as bad as yesterday.  I can even see the slowdown when flipping through the screens in webadmin.

Our biggest "client" is out of school right now, so leaving it on won't be a problem.

I'll PM you the address and the user/pass to the box.

I'm just wondering though,  as fast as it is with the cache off,  how much faster could it be with it on?

I don't have to worry about a quota or anything, since my service is an "unlimited" access pipe.  

Am I imagining things, or didn't one of the previous versions of Astaro actually show you the cache stats?  Is that still here and I am just missing it?

And wouldn't it be strange if the lights were just reversed on the cache?  Off = on, On = off?   :-)

Yeah, in theory caching should both save bandwidth and improve page load times for static content. It should definitely not make things slower!

If they (Astaro) get on the box tomorrow and don't find anything, I will try changing out the HD.  Maybe it has r/w problems.  It isn't making any "chattering" noises, but who knows.

If the HD was having issues, top would show it with high IO wait times and high load averages, neither of which seem to be the case here.

I have no idea then.  But, since it works fine with the proxy cache turned off, I haven't seen anything with the beta that would make me go back to v6.

I think that I am going to turn the IM/P2P security back on tomorrow to see if it slows down the network.  Turn a few things back on every so often to see how much the system will take before is starts to slow down.  Then lock it down.
