Well, its bee a few days since I started playing with the BETA of ASG 7, these are just some of my thoughts and ramblings about the product.
My experience with ASG7:
Virtual machine on a Notebook
Full install on a P4 3GHZ, 1GB RAM, 160GB SATA drive, 3 nic's
Installation:
Although very simple and easy to install, I found myself re-starting the install every time I wanted to go back and change an option. There doesn't seem to be a way to "go back" during the install process.
From a usability perspective its insignificant, how often does someone plan on re-installing the software? Not very often unless your in a test environment.
Setup:
Very easy to setup, even easier if you know what your doing. The one thing that would benefit Astaro is detailed step by step instructions on basic setup tasks (as the product becomes mainstream, more and more novice users will require this info). I'm talking about initial basic steps on setting up NAT and port filter rules, maybe step by step instructions on forwarding port80 to the internal web server.
The included PDF user manual and online help is extremely useful and seems very complete, however expanding on this will make the Astaro product a perfect choice for customers regardless of expertise.
Use:
I've been having a few issue while using the software. Once I begin adding rules, and setting up remote access, on a few occasions I've had the interface freeze and become unresponsive. At times closing the browser and relogging will fix this issue.
More recently, while adding a new packet filter rule the interface froze while I attempted to saved the rule. After logging back in, I found the rule was never created and ever since then the web interface became extremely slow.
This load time can be experienced by going here:

(I took out the IP's, if you'd like to test it out, PM me)
Loading the login page used to take MAYBE 3sec's to load MAX, now it takes 30sec's or more.
Rebooting does not fix the this.
On earlier occasions, the software has become completely unresponsive and required a re-install (I'm not familiar enough with Linux to go down the other path of loading the logging directly into the machine).
This glitch seems relatively random and related to the web interface.
Hopefully this minor issue will be fixed before the release, stability in a firewall product is paramount.
SSL VPN access worked without a flaw. It did however take me some reading to realize I had to enable the user portal to gain access to the client software. Once I had all the details nailed down SSL worked without a hitch.
Overall I love this software (V7 Beta) and cant wait too see it mature into an enterprise level product!
