V7 and Dell 2950

It's likely not grub that doesn't support the integrated SAS controller, it's the kernel that Astaro uses. More than likely the megaraid_sas driver needs to be updated to support the recent SAS controllers on recent Dell machines.

can you please explain what exactly happens during installation?

Does the Hardware detection find your hardware? What does it show?

At which point, the installation/startup does not work?

I think Astaro V7 have a APCI problem with DELL PE1950 & PE2950.

2 solutions for solve this problem:

1. install in "classic mode" or "disable ACPI mode".
2. you must edit grub when in booting process.
   - press "ESC" then press "e" for edit boot parameter
     add this parameter in the end of line "no apic acpi=off"
   - then go to boot normal.
   - you can edit this parameter in "/boot/grup/menu.lst"
   - you must remount partition into write mode by this command "mount /boot -o remount,rw"

you can select only one solution to solve this problem.

I just installed the latest iso on a Dell PE2950, with to following spec:

2x Xeon 5110 1.6GHz/4MB 1066FSB
Riser with PCI Express Support (2x PCIe x8 slots; 1x PCIe x4 slot)
4GB FB 667MHz Memory (4x1GB dual rank DIMMs)
2x 73GB SAS (15,000rpm) 3.5 inch Hard Drive
PERC 5/i, Integrated Controller Card (8 ports, 256MB cache, battery backup)
8X IDE DVD-ROM Drive 1
Redundant PSU No Power Cord 1
Dual embedded Broadcom® NetXtreme II 5708 Gigabit Ethernet NIC
2x Intel PRO 1000PT Dual Port Server Adapter, Gigabit NIC, Cu, PCIe
Broadcom 2Port TCP/IP Offload Engine (TOE) Not Enable


The installation went well, everything with detected, se attached (bad) photos

After reboot the system hangs after Grub message, so after the next reboot I pushed ESC and choose the 1:st option, hangs again.

Any suggestions?

Did you try editing the grub boot parameters as suggested in previous posts?

no I didn't. Hadn't time, but I will try the disable ACPI mode tomorrow.

Also, are you using the latest V7 beta ISO? You didn't mention what version of V7 you were testing.

Tried just now with the 'acpi=off', but didn't work. System hangs

Reinstalled in classic mode, as expected only one cpu found, remaining hardware ok.

After reboot the system is up and running.

Would be nice if this 'bug' could be solved, so I could use the full power of the hardware.

this is a known issue with current V7 beta on dual core Xeons (such as 5110 and 5130).

This will be solved until V7 gets released.

Nevertheless I tried to install with the 'nosmp' switch, but the systems hangs while detecting the hardware, only classic works for my system right now.

Hope your info is right.
