food for thought on interfaces and gateways

I have been thinking about some of the issues I have had while testing v7b in a test environment and then using it for the family access.

My conclusion is most of the issues appear to be caused by the default gateway not being passed to all the programs.
I didn't have any problems with the external interface set to static with a fixed g/w, but when I went to "PPPoE" and "Cable DHCP" I started to loose access from various proxies etc and reports.
I haven't had a executive report today, which I was getting before I put v7b on-line. No stats in dashboard or interface reporting, in fact no graphs for the external interface.

Thursday afternoon I will remove the bridging function from my ADSL modem so I can play with static and dynamic addressing in a real environment.

    I changed the link to static with a fixed gateway and the statistics returned in bot dashboard and reports.
    I had to give up testing because the pop3 proxy keeps telling my outlook client that the proxy has failed. Best I can determine is that it is either the exec report or the spam summary is stuck. I can get as far as message 5 okay and then proxy error occurs. The pop3 proxy started playing up first thing this morning, restarts of the proxy and of the ASG don't fix the problem.

    The other issue is that the ADSL modem requires NAT or it won't work in routingmode because I don't have a real internal ip address. I suppose I could always setup the test box in bridging mode so the real ip address hits the v7b ASG and only it provides NAT.
