does the sshd on the astaro box allow tunneling?

IIRC, yes, if you have PF rules allowing the traffic out of the ASL box.

You can always look at the SSHD config file to see what is enabled/disabled.

is it still supported if sshd config is changed (if required)? I ask because of the warnings when logging in via ssh. wouldn't want to do something that would void support on the box.

On 6.x, the only restriction on forwarding in /etc/ssh/sshd_config is that X11Forwarding is disabled.
