SSL VPN Nice, however...

I have now tested both my Intel based Macbook pro, and Windows XP and can successfully connect across a variety of firewalls without issue to my Astaro box running 6.808 without issue.  Great work guys!

However, having experience with other SSL gateway products, it sure would be nice to have a "Portal" to access network shares, or web based network resources without having to load up a client.

This is handy when traveling or using other people machines, and not needing to load a full client.

Anyhow, I will continue the fun stuff...

  • Other SSL VPN are not really as nice as you think it is. They're all essentially glorified intranet portals. You're limited in what you can do and what you can access. Also, they are not really clientless as most of them require an ActiveX control to load to give you the additional functionality (like using word or outlook), which usually means IE only. With the new end user portal, you can always download the SSL client with configuration if you're not on your own machine.  The SSL VPN client gives you full access to your entire network if you need it, not just a few apps or file shares (but not everyone always wants that [;)] )
  • Just curious (if you know the answer).. is the SSL VPN Client going to be licensed like the current ASC Client, or is it essentially "free"?  Also, when the upgrade build is created, will all my Site-to-Site VPN tunnels survive the upgrade?
