[6.808] Dell PowerEdge 2850 doesn't boot without acpi=off

We've got a Dell PowerEdge 2850 single Xeon processor which does not boot unless we add acpi=off to the command line.

Changing vga=normal on the boot options lets us see this message (see attached): 

Total of 2 processors activated (11178.27 BogoMIPS)

ENABLING IO-APIC IRQs

..Timer: vector=0x31 apic1=0 pin1=2 apic2=-1 pin2=-1


Adding acpi=off to the grub command line gets it to boot OK, but hyperthreading is disabled. Manually disabling hyperthreading in the BIOS results in the same error.

Let us know if we can provide any more information.

    Here's the boot log, /proc/cpuinfo, output from `free` and output from lspci.

    It's a single Xeon 2.8GHz CPU, 512MB RAM, 2 onboard Intel GigE adapters and a PERC 4 RAID controller.

    I have the same issue here except I have a Dell PowerEdge 1850, Dual 3.0 XEON HT proccessors, 4GB memory, PERC 4e/si Raid controller.  I've updated the system bios, PERC firmware, and BMC firmware.  The system worked fine with 6.303 but not with 6.808 or 6.834.  
    The install went fine and I had no errors but once I rebooted for the first time after installing it I just get a black screen and I do not see any drive activity.  
    I don't see disabling acpi which disables hyperthreading as an option.  This system will be heavily loaded and we need all we can get.

    Has there been any headway on this?

    I haven't heard anything. But I don't think disabling hyper-threading will present any significant performance hit.

    If this is a mission critical machine, I certainly wouldn't be running the beta on it, either (are you just testing)?

    Yes, at this point it is only testing.  We would never put a Beta product into production.  That’s just asking for it.  

    From what I see is it not only disabled hyper threading but smp as well.  My system is running in single CPU mode.  I have 2 physical CPUs and would like it to at least use both of them even if it isn't utilizing the HT feature.  

    Our production system is identical to the test system except it is running 6.303 without any issue.  At times the CPU load does spike up which is why this concerns us with version 7.

    Isn't version 7 supposed to be released this month?  It kind of makes you wonder.

    Hmm, that's unfortunate. My 2850 is only single CPU, so I didn't notice that.

    Yep, there are way too many bugs left in ASL beta 7 and they aren't getting fixed fast enough to release this month. I would expect another month or two before things are ready to go if things continue at this rate.
