It would appear I have to enable and configure the smtp proxy to deliver email alerts. I don't remember doing this in v4. Once configured I cannot close port 25 on my external interface - blocking smtp with the packet filter has no effect. I don't need 70 attempts to relay mail a day. Am i being dumb?
I am pretty sure that the system tries to deliver notifications but cannot. Maybe your domain isn't resolvable through DNS - check the mail logs for the reason. In case I am right you could set a SMTP route but disabliing the SMTP proxy afterwards again. V4 was using this route although the proxy was disabled. Give it a shot with V5 and post the result :-)

Removed smtp proxy and all is well again. However to disable smtp proxy wasn't straightforward. I disabled it and the admin screen said disabled but port 25 was still open. I rebooted and the admin screen said smtp proxy enabled so I disabled it and rebooted yet again.
