ASL v5.0 Final Released!

Well, it looks like Intrusion Protection (SNORT Engine) is disabled for home users.  What a bummer  [:(]

I can understand the subscriptions for Anti-Virus Protection (both e-mail & web), SPAM Protection, and Surf Protection.  

However, isn't Intrusion Protection kind of a basic staple for any good firewall?  

If we not can use Intrusion Protection (SNORT Engine) on home licence or power user licence we can´t call v5 a firewall. Becuse without Intrusion Protection (SNORT Engine) v5 is not a firewall.

YOur logic makes no sense overnet..if v5 is not a firewall due to no snort then v4 is not one either..both of which are false

I am not stupied if you think. If a firewall not have portscan like v5 not have without licence you can´t call it firewall. In v4 we have portscan and it is good now we not know if we have an attack on our network or not if we use v5 and pay licence for snort. And if you know snort is free.

I hope you all like ASL V5 as much as I do. 
The last weeks had been very stressfull and we had quite some bugs to fight with.
So kudos to our developers how worked hard to deliver ASL V5 on time.

As Astaro is a company we focused on the bussines side of ASL V5 first.
I hope everybody can understand that.

We didn't forget you, the community, which is helping us significantly debugging the Beta Version of ASL V5.
Thank you very much for that.

We are working on a new pricelist for home users as we speak, 
this will cover the following Subscriptions:
- Virus Protection for Mail
- Virus Protection for Web
- Intrusion Protection
- Surf Protection

Spam Protection is already included in every V5 license for free.

Please be patient and give us some time to work this out.

Just a suggestion, I think that since SNORT is GPL, and Astaro have included it in the distribution, it should be free to activate.  If you want to charge for updates I guess this is fair if you are supplying them.

I hope Astaro work out a good and fair deal for us home/power users.

In addition, there should be *some* way for home/power users to test/trial IPS without having to spend money.  I certainly would not buy a license for it and install it at work without testing it first.  I've trialled stuff like this before and had angry users when a product has not behaved like I thought it would.

Anyway, thanks for the comments Gert and I look forward to hearing what you come up with.

I agree with Simon. You guys have done a great job on V5, and deserve some vacation after it is completed [:)]

It was nice to see someone from Astaro finally reply on here about this, and it would be nice if we could just activate Snort without being able to update it. Kind of like a basic IDS system, updates optional.

I ma not saying you are stupid..yoru logic is flawed a little..portscan detection does not make a firewall a firewall..it is simply an add-on...[:)]

Simon, please don't hesitate to contact us about this. We (and most Astaro resellers) are able to give you time limited keys for you to evaluate the optional features such as virus scanning, IPS, high availability, etc. We want you to be able to fully test the product and be satisfied before spending your money.

If the home user cost for IPS is pretty close to what virus protection is now I will buy it. I love ASL and can't beat the bang for the buck. so if it costs me $100 or less a year then I will gladly pay it  [;)]
