[BUG?] 4.702 Webmin

Hi there,

after installation and login to the webmin interface all is so terribly slow....

And 'cause you have now integrated "top" at the console i see that 'mdw_daemon.pl' is eating much performance.

Testmachine:
----------------
Hewlett-Packard Desktop PC
P3 500MHz
1 NIC for testing purpose only
256 MB RAM

Now at home and installed the V5 as well....

The RAM installed is just 64MB - which was enough for my One-User-Network with V4.

Now after bootup and logging into the webmin eats 60MB.
40MB is just the mdw_daemon.pl.....

Everything is very slow in the webadmin... you click an option and then you can order a pizza and boil a coffee

2. T-DSL doesn't work - as mentioned in the Beta Readme - sigh.

As soon as I try to re-order the packet filter rules I created (Only 5) the interface slows to a crawl and "top" shows 2 mdw_daemon.pl processes, each eating up 48.7 and 49.7% CPU respectively. And it stays like that for about 10 minutes.
When it does come back, the rules are not resorted.

Also, after changing some of the VPN settings, the mdw_daemon.pl process (1 this time) is using 75.5 % processor.

I had to disconnect the V5 because my PPPOE does not come up. And configuration (testing) is not possible with that memory available.

So I have to wait for fix or I will take some memory from work at home an re-test it.

Ok, took some RAM with me and tested the V5 again.
128MB RAM installed - after booting logged into Webadmin and wow, it was faster , much faster... but after a few clicks the memory descends to about 2.3MB free RAM.

try turning off ids\ips and see if that helps the memory usage any

I'm using 256 MB ram and was using 80 Meg consistently until enabling IPS, now it is using about 135 Meg and has begun to use swap space. Just a little (Max: 48 MB), but it's swapping more now. Before enabling IPS, the graphs showed zero swap usage.

from what i have seen in other products snort is a memory hog...if ASL has integrated snort into this package i can see this becoming a problem..in the smoothwall forums snort has been causing grief with constantly rising memory usage when active..seems it is carrying that one here...maybe there is a memory leak in snort?

I doubt it's a memory leak issue with mdw_daemon.pl. It only uses about 7% RAM when it's using 98% CPU then it falls off.
Snort used to have memory issues in the past but since 2.0, I don't think that's a problem anymore.
With all of the rules turned on, snort_inline is using 31.7% RAM. That will drop as you disable rules that you don't want to use. Since this is an INLINE implementation of snort, it WILL slowdown traffic if you're using a LOT of rules on a slower machine.
