Astaro Security Linux V5 Beta Announcement

We're happy to announce and invite you to the first beta version of our next major release of Astaro Security Linux: V5.

With this announcement we want to provide the first snapshot to the public.

Apart from a lot of new features, enhancements and optimizations, we have changed a lot of things  "under the hood" that are not visible in the user interface.

Top features:

•  Intrusion Detection and Prevention
  
•  Content filtering that now includes
   - HTTP virus protection
   - POP3 spam protection
  
•  IPSec VPN Client features now covering
   - Microsoft Windows native IPSec VPN Client
   - L2TP over IPSec
  
•  WebAdmin™ restructured to provide additional features and ease-of-use
  
•  Centralized and unified logging, including local as well as remote archiving
  
•  Comprehensive and easy to use reporting capabilities
  
•  Increased support for system reliability and performance
   - High Memory support up to 4 GB RAM
   - Symmetric Multi-Processor support (SMP)
  
•  Comprehensive Up2Date service covering system as well as pattern updates

The beta release will provide all features of ASL V5 GA as far as available without separate licensing, including Virus Protection, Surf Protection, Spam Protection and the new Intrusion Protection.

We want to put some emphasis on the nature of a beta version - although most things should work properly, please do not use it in a production environment!

We will release additional betas within the next few weeks as there is still some work to do with the following features:

• High Availability
  
• ASL V4 config import
  
• LDAP Surf Protection assignments
  
• POP3 Proxy
  
• Packet filter rules based on "Uplink Failover" interfaces
  
• Dynamic update of network definition type "IPSec User Group"
  
• Reporting capabilities
  
• In some constellations PPPoE (DSL) may not work correctly

That means those features are either not available yet or have not yet been fully tested by the internal Astaro QA.

As there will be system as well as pattern Up2Dates available, we recommend to configure automatic Up2Date with an interval of "Every Hour".

For debugging purposes there are still verbose logfiles in /var/log and /tmp.
Status files are now located in /opt/tmpfs.

There is no support for this beta via eMail or phone. Please use this forum for discussions and further communication.
Online help is available but not complete in all sections.
There will be an ASL V5 manual in english as well as german available as usual with the release of the final version.
The final release date of ASL V5 GA is not available yet.

HW requirements:

•  Astaro recommendation for installations with up to 100 users: Intel Pentium III 900 Mhz, 256MB RAM, 8 GB hard disk drive or better
  
•  Best performance results running on: Dual Xeon or Athlon, 512MB/1GB RAM, 8 GB hard disk drive or better
