PPTP Not working at all for me

Hi,

I'm currently using ASL 2.100 because of a small issue I am having with 4.  I set it up as close to my 2.100 configuration as the new web console allows, and the only difference is that I'm using a 4 port 10/100 DEC ethernet card, and I created a management interface (which I had previously not done).

The setup is this:

eth0 = management interface on a diff subnet that the PPTP-Internal interface
eth1 = PPTP-Internal interface
eth2 = Dirty Internet interface

My guess by the behavior is that ASL is trying to route the PPTP pool address to gove to the client through the management interface instead of the PPTP-Internal interface.  Being on different networks, this does not work right.

The client makes the initial connection, then fails with an error saying that the server is unable to establish a connection in a timely manner.. this can be reproduced every time.

Does my theory on why it's not working sound right?

    i've
    eth0 internal and pptp interface
    eth1 dmz (web-and mail-server, aliased and dNATted on eth0)
    eth2 external interface.

    enabled pptp for local-users, defined ip at user-definition.
    and it works with winxp-clients at home to access the network in the office. (a university subnet with fixed ip's)

    sure you defined the user on the asl-box with right to access this?
    and on winxp i made new network connection, to vpn-network ... or so.

    but it's not working when i try to acces the admin-interface of the asl-box.

    ah, it's on a asl 3.2.18 and 4.06 also...

    You may have another problem, cf thread 24071.  What kind of clients are you using?  Since my upgrade to ASL 4, I can still establish VPN connections with W2K and WXP clients, but no longer with W9x.  Just got some more feedback from Oliver which I'm gonna check out on that front, but it appears that the Windows DUN 1.4 for W9x and ASL 4 don't get along. [:(]

    Win9X should be dropped ! [:)]XP.

    And WinME should never have been birthed [:)]

    I try and keep everything Win2000 or WinXP Pro.

    Actually, I still think W98 is better behaved for older machines--say in the 100-500MHz variety, where W2K (my real favorite) is a bit of a load on CPU and RAM.  And since these machines with W98 still work great for simple browsing, word processing and the like, I see no reason to send any of my (or my friends') hard-earned $$$ to Redmond for an "upgrade," *MOST ESPECIALLY* not a DOWNgrade to XP! 

    That said, I tried Oliver's pointer last night (I will post this on the other thread as well) and IF you go into the W98 DUN properties, click the "Server Types" tab, and check both the boxes for "Require encrypted password" and "Require data encryption", it does work.  This with strong (128-bit) encryption set on the ASL side, too.

    I should add (not sure if it's necessary or not) that I also had "Enable software compression" checked, all others unchecked, and only TCP/IP as an allowed protocol.  I don't konw if these things are necessary, but they're part of what worked for me.

    I dropped 98 due to authentication issues on AD domains.
    I see your reasoning though.

    Win2K should work "OK" on a 200MHz + CPU as long as you have say 128 or 256MB RAM.
