SMTP external route

Normaly u route smtp to a mail server on the inside, but i need to reroute it to and external host, but cant get it to work. Is't possible to route to the expernal if

what means reroute? To the same host the mail came from?
This would end up in an endless loop!

I would like to reroute the mail to a different host on the net. not one of the mx hosts. An external host. Can that be done ?
