Minimum HDD size of 8GB :(

Hello Astaro Team, 

I would like to know, why I need such "big" HDD
for installing a firewall software. IMHO this isn`t really needed and should be at least configurable. Astaro Install ist just ~400MB and I don`t understand why I need 7,6 GB just for Logs...  [:(] 
(Hey - there are linux firewalls which fit on a single floppy disk!!)
You also be aware -  it is recommended very often, that we shouldn`t keep logs on a firewall at all - logs should be moved to a second device which is write only - e.g. a syslog-host,printer.....
Ok - there is space being needed for cache tooo - but who cares about cache when he has bandwidth and doesn`t like web-proxies ?? 

So I really wonder about astaro being such "ressource hog".

I have plenty of systems at work, possibly suitable for astaro (~200-300Mhz) - but unfortunately they have just 4GB HDD. I will not
have a chance to argue buying some new ones for
just putting logs on them . 
Also my home system I would like to use with astaro doesn`t fit to these specs. I`m very sad about this - but I really DON`T want to switch back to smoothwall.(Anybody out there who also doesn`t like Mr.  Richard M. very much ??? )   [;)] 

I think, one main advantage of linux is FLEXIBILITY - unfortunately astaro seems to "remove" that flexibility just by some "nasty" Installation Program, which tells the user "naaaa - this Harddisk is just TOOOOO small - eeehr sorry - no bonus...trash old hdd - buy new one" 

But that that`s not true ! It isn`t too small! YOU developers DECIDED, that you WANT 8GB - but do really all customers NEED this 8GB ? 

I`m not shure here.

Can someone tell me if smaller HDDs will be supported in the future ??? Could you perhaps do something about that ? I would be really really happy about that !

    I used to run 3.xx on a 3.5 gb disk and had plenty of space over so there is no need for a 8 gb disk if the firewall is for a small office or home use. Is there a check for hd size in the new beta version? have not tested it yet.

    I ran my PII266 for 3 months unattended on a 2.5 gig drive. 3.2 works fine on a 2.5

    Unless your doing Heavy HTTP Proxy, a smaller disk should be fine, I have gotten by with 3.5 to 4.3GB disks withour a problem.

    mhhh. very strange things happening here.
    I am SHURE that i had tried it with a 6 GB drive
    and got a message "hdd too small".
    Then I tried installation within vmware with 8GB IDE Virtual HDD and it was ok - then i tried 7.5 GB and I got that message again.....

    Today I did a 2nd try with asl on vmware (asl-3.380.iso) and feel like an idiot. I was able to reduce size to at least 1.7GB and could successfully install ASL on that.
    Maybe vmware tried playing me for a sucker.... !?

    .....still thinking that 1.3 GB for logs is still too much empty space - at least i`d like to use my 1.2 GB Quantum Fireball for ASL  [:)] )

    Astaro Security Linux is designed for professional industrial use with lowest possible maintenance. With a minimum of 1700MB for the HD we feel comfortable for a long uninterrupted uptime without any maintenance.
    With the check while the installation we want prevent questions and reports about side effects because of too small HDs.
     
    Of course you can run ASL on a 300MB HD, all you need is a dump and reinstall with a simple lilo-rerun. All people who have problems with this should use a HD > 1700MB.
