Can someone please explain to me why there is no IDS planned for the new v4? Astaro has seen fit to add more proxy services (POP3) on top of the SMTP, HTTP, SOCKS4/5. VPN I can understand. It would seem that ASL is evolving into more of a web surfing/email appliance than a network security appliance since there is no Network Intrusion Detection System onboard. What's next? FTP proxy, NNTP Proxy, how about an NTP server as well as client. Why not a built in BIND9 for serving internal DNS requests. I'm sure I'll get a lot responces that BIND has security holes etc. Someone here raised the question about having an email server built into ASL and they were shot down since it would be a security issue. Like any of the other services it could be shut off if no one wanted to use it and would then not pose a risk.
Since it would appear that an IDS (Snort or other)won't be included in next ASL, can someone point me in the direction of Snort installation/configuration manuals other than those on the Snort site. I'm not a Linux guru. I know this is probably off topic, but I would appreciate the help.
