ASL 4.0 beta does not install

Hi,

just tried the new beta 4 on a machine which is going to be our firewall - does not boot. ASL 3.2.0 works.

Configuration:
Tyan Dual-Board
1 x Athlon XP 1600+
1 GB RAM
3Ware IDE Raid (Mirror)
2 x Syskonnect SK 9821-V2

The last thing the system says is:

Freeing unused kernel memory: 72k freed
INIT: version 2.78 booting

Then the system hangs forever...

By the way: ASL 3.2.0 has problems with the SK 9821-V2: This brand new card requires a new driver (V 6.0), which can be downloaded from Syskonnect's web site and has to be patched into the linux kernel.

How big are the chances of getting this driver in the ASL kernel? I don't know how long the old cards will still be available (the new ones are cheaper, smaller and better).

Christopher,

I think your problem may be related to the dual-cpu board. Can you try with a single CPU board? (smp is not supported in ASL, so there is not really a performance boost when using 2 cpu's)

Hi,

as I wrote before: It is a dual board, but we only use _one_ single Athlon XP. So there is no need for SMP. ASL 3.2.0 worked with this configuration!

By the way, the reason for the dual board is simply that we wanted two 64 bit / 66 MHz PCI slots for the gigabit cards. We could not find any single CPU boards meeting this requirement.

Does anybody know of such a board?

Have the same problem.

The boot hangs at the point:
Freeing unused kernel memory: 76k freed

This is a 233Mhz Pentium with 128MB RAM, 2500MB HD and 2 NIC's

the BETA currently does not work with old Pentium/K6 CPUs (see announcement) .. already working on this issue..

I did another test install on a dual xeon system (siemens primergy). This time the installer was able to boot a start the bootstrap. But then the CD-ROM was not found. This is funny, as it is a scsi cdrom which is attached to the same bus as the hard disc which is recognized without any problems.

The log showed the following mesage:

Searching for CD-ROM drives
Probing module sr_mod
modprobe: Couldn't locate module sr_mod

Does this ring any bells to you?
