Here comes the first Beta of Astaro Security Linux 4.0!
 
We have been working hard on our sweetheart over the past 9 months and we are now very proud to present it to you - and hope it will make your lives better.
 
Among numerous improvements here are the new key features:
 
* VLAN tagging
* WLAN access point
* Dynamic filtering per IPSec tunnel
* PPPoA DSL client
* Faster and nicer WebAdmin
* Transparent POP3 virus protection
* Heuristic spam protection
* More content filtering
* Easy high availability Up2Date
* Encrypted backup files
* NAT traversal for IPSec
* LDAP user authentication
* Radius for PPTP
* Radius for Surf Protection
* Black/White lists for Surf Protection
* Many new IPSec algorithms
* Extended hardware support
 
Let me place an emphasis on the nature of a Beta - although most things should work properly please do not use it in a production environment.
 
We plan to release additional betas within the next few weeks, still some work to do:
 
* Radius for Surf Protection not working properly
* HA Up2Date not working properly
* WLAN only station mode, access point not working yet
* AMD K6 CPUs not working yet (!?)
 
We will be happy to provide you Up2Dates for this BETA.
 
Licensing will not change, prices will not increase, home user licenses will work, all users with a valid Up2Date license are entitled to a free upgrade. Upgrading will be possible with new ISO + config backup or via Up2Date (only with the final ASL v4 version - not the betas).
 
What else is there to say... we are really looking forward to receive your feedback: first impressions, bug reports, additions/changes to the hardware compatibility list (please post only in this forum).

    Hi all, 

    nearly the whole new online help is included, there is now testplan (we are interested in feedback for every single feature), PPTP passthrough should work, there is no support for UPnP (and no schedule) or dynamic DNS and the version number is because of a snapshot of our development system numbering - sorry for the confusion.
     
    We will release some more betas with the numbering: 3.3XX (XX will increase with every Up2Date or new ISO) - the final version will be labeld as "ASL 4.000".

    Is 4.0 still planned to have something like Hogwash or Inline Snort (Active Intrusion Prevention)?

    (Even with ASL, I'm still a bit nervous about our webserver as the next Code Red or Nimda could still get through. Even with Windows fully patched, we were still badly affected by a redirect problem triggered by Code Red last year. Astaro wouldn't have helped, unless it were to have something like Hogwash.)

    OR, a well-configured reverse Squid might do the trick, but it would need rules for things like Code Red set up.

    Also, is there any docs available on the WLAN AP software you're planning on using?
    Would this be in AdHoc mode, or a full AP? Will it support WEP, etc?

    I would be very interested in this new version including such additions as an intrusion prevention system that can detect and eliminate attacks before they start.  Also, is there any official word on ICSA,or any other certifications for this new version?  Some well known certifications for this firewall once it is finished would be a very powerful message to all of its users and for those who are looking to evaluate this product for their own deployment.

    ASL Admin is being quiet about Snort discussions. I don't believe they are planning on including Snort, Hogwash, or Prelude. I can't figure it out. It would seem like including an IDS would be a "no brainer". It has been on almost everyone's wish list since before 3.2. There are currently a couple of threads in the Hackers/Beta forum for installing Snort yourself. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

    Hi Freaks,
    i'm a new member so say hello first.

    this time i'm testing some firewalls, like checkpoint, smoothwall and of corse ASL, because of redesigning my private and non-commercial Network. My english is not really good, so excuse me.

    The version 3.2 from ASL is really great! Now, i've downloaded the new Beta 3.380 and i love it! I love the speed from the webadmin(istration). I'm sure, there are some bugs in the beta version, but go on. Big respect to the coders!
