Dialup and Astaro

I'm trying to get a dialup connection working under ASL 3.2.  I've made a chrooted environment for pppd (/var/chroot-pppd) and got pppd dialing up, connecting etc.

I'm just wondering where to go from here.  Is there any way to get the ppp link to appear as part of the WFE?

I was thinking if I add a definition for the serial port to /etc/itfhw.conf perhaps I could add the interface that way?  I suppose I'd have to add ppp-pppd to /etc/itfdesc.conf as well, wouldn't I?  I not sure how to go about this though.

Is there documentation anywhere for adding this kind on functionality?  I find it strange that ASL doesn't support dialup, seeing as all the binaries required are already installed on the machine, the kernel supports it and most ADSL connections I've seen have a backup dialup link for when the ADSL network goes fubar (not an infrequent occurance unfortunatly).

    From the discussions back then, I believe that it was the concensus that firewalls have ETHERNET interfaces, and that dialup boxes are cheap enough to add on.

    This is not something that I feel is a good idea, but I have proved that ASL can have PPP plugged into it...

    Well, in my experience with low end firewalls, they don't have just ethernet interfaces.  They have an ADSL line, a dial up line and some ethernet.

    Maybe it's just because telstra's ADSL network is crap, but every ADSL connection in Australia comes with a dial up account to use when the ADSL network goes to crap.  It would be nice if the ASL supported dialup because then I could use this backup link when the pppoe fails to come up repeatedly.  Then when the ADSL network perks up again, pull down the dialup.

    It really doesn't seem like that much of an issue to add it to ASL.  If I could hack around in the wfe scripts, I would add it myself...  I don't see why it's not supported.  You already have everything you need on the machine, so it's not a binary security issue.  You already have ppp interfaces, so it's not that.  Why isn't there support?  (BTW 'Just because' isn't an answer.  'We couldn't be bothered' is a reason, all be it a poor one.)
