LCD and Via Mini-ITX

You don't really need a monitor at all on the firewall box.

If the mainboard has VGA out, it will work on standard analogue flat panels.

The original poster is not really talking about a monitor.  Its a small 4x20 or so LCD display that connects via serial or parallel port.  You can set it up to display critical info or scroll through critical info.  This would be a pretty handy thing to put on a firewall.

Wish I knew of support for it.

FYI, I was able to get LCD4Linux  working on both ASL 2.x and 3.x

It can show network throughtput SUM only, 1 nic with modification, more with massive modifications. The authors are planning on improving this.
Also, it shows CPU util and system load, disk I/O, etc.

It simply enables the built in functionality of Astaro to display stuff on the LCD ...

It's moderately tame compared to some of the crazy stuff out there these days, like lcdproc and whotnot.

No graphs or anything, but it scrolls the details of file system info, interface configurations, processor load, and more stuff that I'm forgetting.

You can see what it'll output by typing newticker.pl on the command line of your Astaro Distro ... you may have to copy that /etc/ticker.config-default file to /etc/ticker.config .... NOTE do not do this after having install my hacks ... you'll break it.

Once I actually get an LCD (not just the Palm Pilot emulation), I'll probably do some more poking around for a good all around install ...

Perhaps someone can hack a little :-) 
(lcd4linux supports grafic and displays
up to 8*24 characters, e.g. used in Siemens
based phones).
A litte idea to the matrix orbital users:
Did a "newticker.pl > tty1 &" work?

Is the module inside ASL the same as LCD4Linux??  If not, can LCD4Linux be added to ASL firewall or have what ever LCD module use with Astaro firewall redirect the variable to LCD4Linux and then over to a Matrix LCD?

afaik, LCD4Linux can't scroll properly, so I don't think redirecting ticker into it somehow would display well.

Regardless, LCD4Linux has configuration options for many of the same items, although you are limited to choosing 4 (assuming a 4-line display).

I am somewhat confuse by your reply.  What do you mean that LCD4Linux can't scroll property?  Since I never saw an actual output from astaro OEM LCD, I have no idea what the output suppose to look like.  When you say scroll, do you mean scrolling status one line after another, much like using the "page down" key with a word document?

Second, you mention earlier in one the posting that you got the LCD4Linux to work under ASL3.x.  What were some of the thing you were able to do, and not able to do?

Lastly, can you disable astaro default LCD ticker, and then install and use LCD4Linux exclusively on the astaro firewall? (without breaking anything else)

Thanks for all the information Greg, I got my Matrix Orbital working great with Astaro 3.x following your instructions. 

Only minor issue is I have to manually start ticker in the init.d directory. But other than that it went smoothly.

My LCD display locked up, meaning that data that was in the middle of being outputed and just stopped in mid-sentence.

I cannot login to the machine via ssh, the webadmin interface, or by keyboard locally. 

The funny thing is it is still totally routing everything fine, but I have no control over anything.

The machine ran without any issues for a few weeks before installing the Matrix LCD module.. I wonder if there is a correlation or if it was just odd timing for a screwup.

I would like to re-open the same issue and see if someone has any ideas of how to accomplish the same task on the ASL v4.  It looks like ASL v4 handles the LCD support a bit different and the previous instructions no longer work.

If somone knows how to get this to work, please be kind to let me know.

I haven't installed v4 yet, so I'm not quite sure how it's different.  I'm waiting for a pluspack for 4.0 before I make the switch.  This was supposed to come out in february I think, but it still hasn't been released yet, afaics.

Anymore, I'm basically using lcdproc as the main engine, with a couple of additions to be more informative about astaro specific things like multiple ethernet cards, astaro version, and all the partitions.

If someone has been able to get lcdproc running on V4, please note how you've done it and I can post my additions to it.
