3.050

What kinda nics.    I know certain chipsetson your network cards cause the lockup in linux.   Its rare but I heard about it.

OH btw I installed it fine with no problems.   I use realtek based chipset NICs

Downloaded 3.050 and tried to install it. It gets to the last step in the install and after partitioning and formatting the drive it fails when doing the checksums. The PC is a 400Mhz, 128MB ram, 20GB HD, 2 Intel NICs. Its running 3.020 now cause all newer beta versions fail to install on it. Done md5 on the CDs so its not bad burns or anything, the new betas just don't like my PC. Any ideas why?

If you have worried about the machine spec of your server then why not run 2.x version of Astaro? It works pretty good and has less burden on older machines, and is more compatible at the moment (remember 3.x is beta)

Then you have a firewall that works and you don't have to worry too much.

But it is great that you are "testing" it on your old equipment to give bug reports to Astaro.

The only reason I say this is that I also am having problems with 3.050 installation, not as severe as yours, I'm like the other guy, I get to the Installtion Progress section, everything completes ok but the 
"Installing Package Checksum"............: FAILED"

Then when you reboot, it says "kernel panic no init found. Try passing init= option to kernel."

Machine is:
Dell Dimension XPS T500
192 MB Ram
6GB IDE
IDE CD
2 x 3905C 3Com NICs (on IRQ 10 and 7)
Everything disabled in bios that is not needed:
LPTs, COMs, floppy, etc.

This machine ran 2.x fine and 3.04x ok(ish)

I'm going to try downloading the gz from the ftp server rather than the http server and see if that helps.

Unzipping the file with Winzip 8.0, but this time I am going to trun gunzip (win32) if I can find it.

Burns fine, data structure of the CD is readable on Win2000 machine so I don't think its the burn.

OK I got it working now.

Seems that there is either a problem with the file on the http download at:
http://download.astaro.com/iso/ASL_next_version_BETA/asl-3.050.iso.gz

Or there is an issue with using winzip 8 to unzip the gz file.

Anyway this is what I did to get the darn thing working.

1. Downloaded from the ftp site:
ftp://ftp.astaro.com/pub/ASL_next_version_BETA/asl-3.050.iso.gz

2. Used the win32 version of gzip to unzip the file: http://www.gzip.org/gzip124xN.zip using the command: c:\downloads\astaro\gzip -d asl-3.050.iso.gz

3. Burned the iso to CD using CDRWin

4. Checked the CD was readable

5. Booted and installed on the server.

Seems fine so far, only bugs I noticed are:

1. Surf Protection thingie still doesn't work properly, you add a profile, then go back to edit it and it asks you for a profile name when you try and save the changes.

2. Virus Protection, you click "Enable" and the little display changes from red to green, then you go somewhere else in admin, go back to SMTP proxy and its gone back to red again.

well.. uhm, I wanna run the 3.04
don't know why, want new features I guess... and since the 3.041 runs stable (I've noticed no problems with it) I thought 3.05 would be no problem. I know the 3.05 might be a tad slower, but since I only got like a couple of computers speed is not that big of a issue...


but please Markus.. you got any idea of whats wrong?? please le me know

I like also testing it for home use as the boy mentioned above. And I like this Linux, except it does not support any services like smb or ftp, but I'm trying to get it working. My previous was LinuxFromScratch but I only need smb, so a firewall with DSL Support inbuilt is a better.
Okay, the first thing I've reported here was a bit lazy, but I work as a technical supporter/administrator for an ISP, so I have to deal with such questions and I like to help people with their problems.
My network here has just 5 PCs but it is a fantastic test environment as there is a notebook, an old pc (running windows 3 ;-), build 1992 ), and some new ones.

I understand your predicament, I too like to run the latest and greatest.. is a occupational hazard working in the IT industry ;-)

I just thought you wanted a working firewall, but I got it wrong so sorry.

Did you try the method I suggested above?

I have had several issues with 3.05   I am running PPPoE so I been running 3.04 and it worked great.   

I am gonna try another system for 3.05 and try and get more bug reports for Astaro.  Remember guys its a BETA so if problems happen give them feedback.   The more we work with astaro the better the product we get

I'll try out your "method" a bit later on Biffa... will get back with result.
