http proxy with 3.0.30

Just a (simple?) question: how can I configure the http proxy and where do I check it's usage?
Whatever I try, no packets seem to reach it, e.g. no connection to any webserver is possible. The only way I got it "working" is by allowing the internal net to access the external servers directly (and thus avoiding the proxy)!

I don't care wether transparent or standard proxy - I just want a configuration where my browser connects via the proxy - otherwise it's simply NAT, with no checking at all.  [:(] 

I wonder if I got something completely wrong? I got my SmoothWall up in 30 minutes (with proxy!)but have spent more than two days now on the asl and still no success?!?  [:S]
