Well, I did the update from 3.031 to 3.040 and it took 3 tries to complete. Once complete, the following was observed:
1. Fixed the internal > external routing.
2. Without Squid running, no HTTP services available
3. POP refuses to connect
4. Shutdown/reboot reports MANY errors on the console.
5. Once up, started taking hits on SPT 6348 DPT 2800-2900 (progressed from 2801 to 2900 randomly) from all kinds of sources.
6. Decided best not to even go further in testing 3.040 for now, Back to 2.022 until next update.
