I believe you would run into a problem here, as only the Linux OS part of Astaro is GPL. The rest is private code (web interface, backend). That has to be licensed, and is not covered by GPL.

Hi all,

With the new licensing and stuff, maybe it's time we put up a project to make the "ASL" BSD version come to reality. We are a bunch of resourcefull people here and we can make our own truly free version of ASL, with HA,QOS,Proxys and all the other stuff we want.
We can build a project of our own, i can host all of it and do the project management, i can also do programming and make the webinterface (maybe it should be a part of WEBmin ??).

Let's pic this up and see to it that everyone can have a free firewall that fit's all of our needs.

I think it's a great idea. This idea I also suggested to a bunch of friends of my but then a linux-OS supported CD-version. The problem is that they have not much time to work on it very soon... I miss some features in Astaro ( wich I reported to ASL) and maybe it's possible to implement it in the *BSD version. Also if you need some hostspace, I'll be willing to  give some (also depending on the the data-traffic, got a limit of 1 GB a month, for now !!!) Let's move on with this project !!!!

Well, I also think it's a good idea. But I think it would be much easier to write an Webmin module (wich I am going to do as soon as the uPNP programmation is done)

I also don't have a lot of time but I would spend time in this project because its good. As long it is fully GPL.

Still missing the big initiative here.

I've started collecting all the modules needed 4 the firewall. So far I have this spec.

HA (failover and loadbalansing without packet loss ) - ok.
Routing - ok.
Wireless bridge/AP Wlan2Wlan repeater - ok.
DDOS detection - ok.
Dynamic/intelligent rule adding - ok.
PPOE - ok.
chroot env. - ok.
DHCP server/client (for each IF) - ok.
DNS proxy - ok.
web proxy - ok.
mailproxy with AV-gateway (free) - ok.
transparent proxy - ok
secured webserver with php - ok.
Basic webinterface with if and rules - done.
web-if 2 system call (new/updated config transfer) - ok.
Portsan detection - ok.

My knowledge of *BSD is minimal ! But I would like it to test it ! As I earlier said I'm willing to to give some free webspace (max 1 GB/month for traffic) or maybe you would like a  bulletinboard ? Let me know....

I do not need any site I have my own network with web/ftp/mysql/mail/cgi/php/forum etc. already running.
It's 100Mbit unrestricted, but thanks 4 the hosting offerings anyway.
What I need is programmers to do the backend of the firewall. The webinterface itself is no problem. The making of logging, instalation and piecing stuff together, that I need others to take care of.

What firewall program were you thinking of using?
I think the BSD's are semi divided on which is the best.

Since Astaro has come up with a Power License i see no need to put too much effort into this 4 the moment.

If there are any good programmers who want's to do this than i'm game. If not, we'll let it rest 4 now.

Why starting a fork?
It's not better to join an existing project to help it to go better ? Something like ipcop.
Ok, it does not run with *bsd , but could have a lot of features in many people will contribute to it.

And the web interface is already done ;>

Why not use IPCop was the question?  I think that I know the answer...  I have used IPcop, and others and have found that some of the features are missing that astaro has not to mention I have found memory leaks ect with even new versions of IPcop... Running astaro and IPcop on the same box at different times of course, I found IPcop to require a reboot more often.  Just my 2 cents but I just feel that astaro is better put together and offers a lot of things that small to medium sized buisness use especially the pptp roadwarrior

I've seen the ipcop future features, and seems interesting. But no one is helping the author to keep it running.

Hi all,

There are many reasons to run it in FBSD or BSD in general.

1 support for almost any nic.

2 Support for almost any RAID controller both SCSI and IDE (including old ones that doesnt' work on linux, like the Mylex DAC 960 range with old bios).

3 Extreamly stable Kernel and lots of kernel tuning parameters to make the system handle loads of hi-speed internet links and to tune/optimise the system for traffichandling.

4 Bridging interfaces meaning that you dont have to subnet your ip'range (no loss of ip's on multiple nettadress and broadcast).

5 Full support for WaveLAN (802.11a/b etc)
This enables us to make a fullfunction bridge/acesspoint with encryption (not WEP), mac filtering and of course all the other funtions of the firewall will apply And still using only one box. We can even have mutiple WLAN's to be used as both office and WAN links.

All this is implemented in FBSD 4.6 Rel.

Meaning no need 4 extra programming.

PS. I'm still playing around with this and I'll post a site address when I have someting that can be tested.

Have you looked at the closedbsd http://www.closedbsd.org  project. It is based on freebsd and runs from CD with the ability to save configuration data to floppy, it's missing ipsec at the moment but it could be a good starting point.

Good points espen...  exactly what I am thinking. Go on and tell us if u need any help or when its time to join the project on sourceforge or so...
