Kernel question

Barry,
if you look at the modules - you'll find that there are modules residing in the following directories:
/lib/modules/2.4.4-asl-0.010510.3
/lib/modules/2.4.8-asl-0.010815.0

I'd imagine that it is running 2.4.8, because all the net modules are in that dir.

My problem however, is that when I compiled a module on that kernel - on a RedHat 7.1 system - it just gives me a load of "unresolved symbol" errors - and of course it doesn't work... So, perhaps it's not 2.4.8 after all??

I've tried compiling it with and without versioning (or whatever that thing is called) in the kernel...but nope...

I have twice asked if they could be so kind to compile a module for me, but I have received no response.

I can imagine that the ASL programmers are busy doing release these days, but there are way too many questions that pass by unanswered on this forum right now. 

I would also love to have a development ASL around. I run VMware on my dev machine, so I can easily install distros for this particular purpose.

Come to think of it... perhaps RedHat 7.1 has a newer glibc than version 7.0 (which I read had compatible binaries)

Thoughts?

My RedHat 7.0 and 7.1 don't seem to compile anything that uses GLIBC to work on Astaro.
However, I upgraded the GLIBC on my 7.0 box due to RH security bulletins, so it's at 2.2 now.
Astaro 1.90 does not have GLIBC 2.2.

RedHat has an option to install "compatible" glibc stuff to work on 6.1 and older RedHat systems... http://www.redhat.com/support/wpapers/glibccompat/usage.html 
I don't know if that would help compile for ASL or not.

I was able to get a few small programs working on ASL by using -static on the GCC compile line, but this is not ideal for as they will are 10x or so bigger that way.

There really should be an ASL Hackers FAQ or other docs that cover these issues.

you can check the glibc version by typing /lib/libc.so.6 - first line shows the version...

Another method of checking the kernel version:

cat /proc/version

(v2.0 final)

well.. I figured the kernel version, but there have to be something wrong, because the modules compiled fail to load (some symbols stuff).

Astaro crew, could you distribute the source where you compile the release versions?
I understand that things released in public need to be robust products, but perhaps people that are ASL hackers could download some source code whenever a new version is released.

This way - others than yourself could help out if someone needed something special compiled. 
You could also, if you dare, set up some rules for adding packages to ASL - so it could be customized more easily.

Just some thoughts.
