Beta installs still failing

So, I have now tried 2.92, 1.93 and 1.95 and they all fail in exactly the same place - after formatting and partitioning, and as the open source software is about to be installed. (It hangs at 0%.)

!.81 installs on the same system with no difficulty. Does anyone have any suggestions at all as to what I might be able to try that might get the install past this stage?

As I said before, it worries me a little that just as it starts the hardware detection a message flashes at the bottom of the screen saying something failed - but of course it does not stay around long enough to see what it is. This happens with 1.95 as well.

    I am not convinced it is a bad download. 

    I have downloaded in different OS's (Win 2K, Mac OS X, Linux PPC and OS 9) with a  range of browsers and ftp clients. I always get md5sums that match those on the download page. Even after burning a CD with the 1.95 image, I can make an iso image of my physical CD and that image file also has a matching md5sum.

    I am able to download and burn other .iso images, including the asl 1.81 image and they  work just fine, so it seems unlikely that my burning software (Roxio Toast) is to blame.

    Perhaps someone from Astaro could be kind enough post some md5sums for files on the CD so I can check those?

    Since the problem has arisen several times with different betas but at exactly the same place - which I assume is the point it starts copying from the Cd I wonder if it could be something to do with my CD drive. Any suggestions how to debug that - short of getting another cd rom drive.

    I now have a couple of other data points.

    I tried switching hard drives and get a little further. With an 8GB drive it gets 15% through installing the open source software and with a 2Gb one it gets to 7% before hanging. It hangs at 0% with a 4GB drive - which is what I'd like to use longer term.

    Any ideas anyone...

    did you try to temporarily attach network cards and HD to another system and do the install there ? My guess is that the HD geometry is somehow incorrectly reported ... wild guess tho.

    That certainly sounds plausible.

    Unfortunately the one thing I don't have at the moment is a suitable spare system. But perhaps I can find something.

    Cnn you think of anything I might be able to do to help it along further? In the mean time I think I'll go back to 1.8.

    Hi Ian,

    The first thing that came to my mind is either the hard drive is not primary-master and the cdrom primary-slave or the the cdrom your using is to fast.  My assumption is base on issues that I've read in previous post.  Other than that, maybe a geometry thing.  Have you set the drive in LBA mode if you have the option to do so ?
