Forum admins...do you know vb 3.8.6 is now end of life and is a security threat?

I've heard XenForo is a viable replacement for VBulletin, and supports importing the databases from VB.

Xenforo would be viable but it also depends on what the new forums are running.  Sophos wants to unify their multiple forums into one package.

If the move of the ISO download to sophos.com is a harbinger of things to come with the User BB, we're all going to be disappointed.  A readme on Astaro.com is a poor substitute for a file - especially when the file does not exist in the new location. What would have been lost had the old files been left in place?

Quick update and some confirmations:

1. We'll keep all of the posts on here so nothing is lost.  You won't need to take back ups.  If something is missing I'm here to resolve it.
2. We'll keep all the current mods on here as mods in the new system.
3. Regarding the localized boards: Current thinking is that we'll migrate the German board only and set it to read-only (can search but no new posts).  We're working on a function to allow non-English posts to be tagged by the poster (or you mods should correct when you see it's missed).  Then searches can filter by language so if you don't want to see localized posts you can exclude them.
4. I'd prefer to take the opportunity to 'clean up' the stale user accounts of those who have not signed in for say 12 mths.  This would de-clutter the new authentication system/free up usernames for the future.  Old posts from non-migrated users will be attributed to an account(s) setup to show the user wasn't migrated.

If you haven't already decided on which forum software to use, you may want to take a look at ElkArte as well, it also imports VBulletin.

One of the forums I have frequented over the years uses it, the owner is quite happy with it from speaking with him. See B4Print.

I feel the pain. I've run a vb4 forum for many years now. Can't see us going to vb5, but can't see anything to move to that stands out.

vb4 had a lot of plugins and addons that we used. But we're now finding that those great addons are not as used these days. So a simpler FAST forum with great search would be good.

Out of the box searching on many forums is poor. Slow and restricted by needing queries to be longer than 3 characters - not great when most of the phrases used are TLA's [:D]

Adding in a text indexer like Sphinx made our forum search a new fast and efficient engine. We beat many others in the same market place in terms of search quality. Some things you can't search for on the competitions site.

Can anyone point me to a post that has complex formatting?  I need to get an example or two of a real post with lots of lines of formatting like bold, italics, numbering, underlining, screenshots - the more in one post the better but it has to have more than just one or two bits of formatting.

I'm hoping you probably know of some posts that are a go to reference written a while ago that are almost documentation/documents themselves.

It would be great to have some links.
