I used to admin a vbulletin 3.8x forum.  I ahd to do a ton of work into keeping spammers from one registering and then posting.

Two things:

Admins:

1/. go get an akismet key and activate the in the forums admincp

2.  Look into installing the stopforumspam.com modification at stopforumspam.com.  

between these two I managed to nearly eliminate spammers form the forums.

    I just installed the vbStopForumSpam Plugin to check user registrations against a RBL.
    Hope that helps and does not generate much false positives.
    Please let me know if you experience any Problems.


    I had a few with it..(folks used hte contact form to say it did not allow registration) i managed to fix that by telling the plugin to allow registrations if it can't reach the rbl server..it increased the spammers a bit but I never had a false positive...and increasing the spammers means you would see a slight increase but overall it was lower than when it started...YMMV..[:)]
