Sophos Firewall: STAS - How to troubleshoot: Service Failed: Can not start service

This guide outlines what to do when you experience the following STAS related errors:

  • Failed: Can not start service.: STAS
  • Fatal Error: The data area passed to a system call is  too small
  • Fatal Error: The service did not start due to a logon failure

The most likely cause of these issues are related to the credentials provided during STAS installation.

The user accounts used to install STAS should meet the following requirements:

  1. User must have the "Right to logon as a service" (even if Administrator)
  2. User must be able to monitor the Security event log
  3. User should be part of the Backup Operations and Event Log Readers group
  4. Full NTFS permission to the STAS folder 

After confirming these requirements. On Windows, navigate to:

  1. Start > Run
  2. Type services.msc
  3. Find the Sophos Transparent Authentication Service
    •  
  4. Right-click Logon and enter the STAS user
  5. Click Apply
  6. Go back to STAS and the service should be started already
