Can't get WiFi Hotspot working

Hi,

the hotspot configuration is driving me crazy. Please help me to unknot my config.

I had configured 3 WiFi radios, the respective DHCPs and linked them to the Access Point.

Everything works perfect. Of course I can log in with the predefined passwords.

Now, one of those SSID that is broadcasted is called 'Guest_WiFi' and I want to use this one and want to convert it into a Hotspot with the name 'Gast_WiFi'.

So going to 'Hotspot' menu, enter the 'Gast_WiFi' and assign the interface 'Guest' that is linked to the SSID 'Guest_WiFi'.

I thought the hotspot will not take control over the login way to access. But it's still the same. Only 'Guest_WiFi' is visible and I can login with the predefined password.

How can I see the Hotspot SSID?

Please help.

Regards, Frank

  • Thank you Karlos for reply.

    Sounds reasonable and logical.

While configuring a Hotspot you only can select as an interface the available SSID networks or the Port where the Access Point is attached.

    Nothing else.

Please give me a hint where to start.

I created first some wireless networks, assigned them to one Access Point and than I tried to define the Hotspot selecting one of those wireless networks.

Obviously as you mention this does not work.

I have no glue at the moment from where to start?

Should I delete all those wireless networks to release the Access Point first and than start first Hotspot configuration?

  • Hi Frank,

Sorry let me retract that last answer. I've done some testing and it is possible to configure your Hotspot on an existing wireless network whether Bridged to LAN or Separate Zone.

To understand your configuration further, could you provide a snapshot of your Hotspot settings? Also, which firmware version are you using on the XG?

    Thanks,

    Karlos

  • Ok Karlos, here we go....

    I'm using 17.0.3MR3.

I'm reconstructing after deletion again step by step:

1.) Create a wireless network with SSID Guest_WiFi. Now this interface appears in the network overview.

2.) Create the Hotspot Guest_WiFi and link it to the interface.

3.) Add network interface Guest to my Network Group linked to one Access Point. Now Guest_WiFi SSID is visible.

Of course DHCP is missing but it shows again and clear to me not my Hotspot. This is again the SSID where I have to log in with password.

    Please review those attached images.

I do not understand why creating a Hotspot does not publish the name of the hotspot anywhere. Even if I use completely other names.

    Regards, Frank

  • Hey Frank,

Thank you for showing me your settings. The behaviour you are seeing is as expected.

The Hotspot type you have selected is "Terms of Use Acceptance" and no password is required, therefore, it will only ask for a password if one is set on your Guest_WiFi.

The name you have set on your Hotspot is just a label for that Hotspot and is not actually broadcasted. If you would like the name "Gast_WiFi" to be broadcasted instead, then you would replace "Guest_WiFi" with "Gast_WiFi" in your Wireless Settings.

To achieve your means, you can set your Guest_WiFi to no encryption and set your Hotspot type to Password of the Day. You could also change the broadcast name to "Gast_WiFi." This results in your guests seeing "Gast_WiFi," when they connect they will have to enter the password of the day that changes daily. Please let me know if you have further questions.

    Thanks,
    Karlos

  • Thanks Karlos.

You gave me the only missing part of information.

I had to set the respective WiFi to no password and the hotspot will take over.

In the web pages I went through and there where a lot it was not clearly stated.

    Thank you.

    Best regards,

    Frank
