Unable to connect to account.synology.com

I have been having an issue connecting to account.synology.com through my network.  I can access it through my phone when on another network but not when at home.  Also, isitdownrightnow shows the site is up and running.  So the issue seems to be with something on the XG.

Using diagnostics on the XG, I cannot IPv4 ping account.synology.com.  I can IPv6 ping it.

Using the Policy Tester, the XG shows that all connections to account.synology.com are permitted.

I cannot see any blocked connection attempts from my computer in the XG firewall logs.

Is there something that I'm missing?

I am using XG 17.0.3 MR-3.

Thanks.

  • This appears to be something to do with the firewall.  When I create a rule to accept any to any without any filters I can connect without issue to the account.synology.com site.  If I delete that rule, I can still connect without issue to account.synology.com (unless I log off and back on again).  It would seem that something gets downloaded to my browser.

This also solved another issue that I've been having with Bitdefender.  We have several Macs and Windows computers on our home network.  Bitdefender updates without issue on all of them except one Mac.  When I create a firewall rule to accept any from any without any filtering, Bitdefender can now update on that one Mac.

I tried turning one firewall feature on or off at a time to narrow down the cause.  This doesn't work unless I log off and back on again.  Seems like this will take a while to narrow down.

  • Okay, so for some reason it seems that the Protect -> Firewall -> Network Rule -> Web Malware and Content Scanning -> Scan HTTP was interfering with account.synology.com.  Once I disabled this, I was able to access the site without issue.

The Bitdefender issue is quite interesting.  As noted above, Bitdefender was updating on all the other computers on the network aside from one Mac where it was recently reinstalled (I think after upgrading to XG v17).  Since that time, it would refuse to update the virus definition files.  This was solved by disabling the firewall filtering.  With that done, the virus definition files updated without issue.  I then reinstated the firewall rules I had before.  Bitdefender now updates without issue.  Must have been something special in the initial Bitdefender update file that XG was blocking.

  • Not to beat a dead horse, but it is the "Scan FTP for Malware" setting that blocks access to the account.synology.com site.
