Install ISO/USB Image von HPE ProLiant DL20 Gen9 failes

Hi Sophos Community

I've been trying to install a Sophos image on a new HPE ProLiant DL20 Gen9 Server, for a while now.

Image: SW-SFOS_17.0.3_MR-3-131.iso

If I do a normal image with RUFUS (v 2.18) I get the following error:

"Starting Fireware Installation

Failed getting ISO Disk
press y to reboot"

If I create the Stick using the "DD"- Mode, the sever gets stuck at "Attempting Boot From USB DriveKey (C:)", with a blinking cursor.

  • The BIOS is in "Legacy Mode"
  • I tried several USB Utilities like "unetbootin" or the HP Drive Key Utility
  • I also tried burning an ISO to Disk and use a USB CD-Rom
  • I followed all threats I could find in the Sophos forums and also this guide: https://community.sophos.com/kb/en-us/126906

Server Specs:

  • HPE Proliant DL20 Gen9
  • HPE H240 Smart Host Bus Adapter
  • Firmwares at newest version

If anyone has a Sophos running on a Gen9 Server, how did you do it?

thanks a lot,

lauro

  • Hello

In the meantime I solved, resp. worked around the problem. The DL20 Gen9 is now running fine with Sophos XG Firewall.

Here is what I've done to get it running:

    1. Remove the HPE H240 Smart Array Adapter
    2. Use B120i Dynamic Disk Controller in AHCI Mode
    3. Installing Sophos XG with help of a second PC:
      1. Put a SATA Disk into a Workstation an installed Sophos on it
      2. Removed the Disk after installation and put it into Proliant DL20 Gen9
    4. Booting Sophos XG

Sophos started correctly, however there were 2 more problems:

    1. Only 1core of my 4core CPU was detected
      1. Resolution: Disabled ACPI in CPU pptions (RBSU)
    2. There was an error message in the boot process "[Firmware Bug]: The BIOS Has Corrupted Hw-PMU Resources"
      1. Resolution: Disabled "Processor Power and Utilization Monitoring" in Service Options

It is quite the drawback, that I have to go on without the SAS 12Gb/s Raid Controller. However this is a feasible solution for me now.

  • Good evening,

to get the sort of disk array you are after you would need to go the VM route and for a home user that throughput is just not justified only for a large company with many users. An ssd will do just as well.

  • From this point of view you are right, of course.

However this Firewall is intended to be used for a 450 client+ network (LAN-Party event), and original HPE SAS disks have very good pricing over HPE SSDs.

Also, getting rid of that raid controller wasn't really the issue in this case. Booting an installation media (USB or ISO) was. Removing the Raid didn't solve that. I still had to use a second PC (legacy HP workstation) to install the image onto a SATA harddrive.
