Installation of XG Firewall OS on a new PC

Hello, 

until now Iam using Sophos XG Firewall on an ESXI server.

 

After some discussions of "is it safe in a VM" i want to install it on a physical "Server". It is an Intel J3160 Board (4*1,6Ghz and 8 Gb RAM). 

 

But i've got a very big problem while installing the OS. It seems to me the that the OS can not initial my disk. It is a 320GB Harddisk. 

 

When I start the Installation with the File: SW-SFOS_17.0.3_MR-3-131 he says to me that I have installed a 320Gb HDD. But when i Start the installation the setup stops at: "Signature Partitions". 

 

Someone got an Idea, how I can solve the problem ?

    Hi,

    what sort of disk is it? Will need to connect via standard sata interface. Not sure if msata is supported yet?

    It is an old Sata 2.5 HDD.

    It was my old Notebook Harddrive.

    Hi,

    was it encrypted or used with special window boot, if so you might need to reformat it on a windows machine to remove all the existing partitions. Usually the XG installer can handle this.

    there was an installation of PfSense on this HDD.

     

    I tried to remove everything with gparted first. But later i Can try it with an Windows.  What kind of Filesystem should I use?

     

    Fat32 // NTFS ?

    Hello,

    The HDD could formatted and used on my Windows PC.  => So the HDD can not be broken.

     

    Bút I used another one in the "Server".

     

    Now the Point : Formatting Signature Partition is working fine.

    -> But the Point: Installing Firmaware for appliance SF01V_SO01 is broken.

    ==> Error: Unable to install Firmware

     

    What do  i wrong :(

    Now I have tried to install an old Firmware.

     

    The Firmware is called 16_05_0098.  Here are no Problems when i tried to install it.

     

    Could it possible that the new OS is broken ?

    Mario,

    When in doubt, repartition your drive as one full partition, and format it in Fat 32.  The XG installer will repartition and reformat it if necessary.

    You may also have to make a change in BIOS to boot the hard drive as a standard HDD/SSD and not as mSATA.  My Zbox CI325 Nano refused to install until I figure out to change this.

    If this is the issue, the fix will be specific to your individual firewall computer. You didn't say what you have, do I can't help you any further.  Is this a firewall appliance from Netgate/PfSense, or did you purchase your own?  What model is it?

    HEy thanks for helping me. 

    It is an own created PC. 

     

    The Mainboard is an ASUS J3160 with an Intel Celeron J Processor ( 4x1.6-2,3 Ghz). I've installed 2 DIMMS of DDR3 RAM (capacity 2 x 4 GB).  

     

    So I've first run it with an PFsense. And now i want to Switch back to my Sophos XG Firewall. But the switchback did not work. 

     

    I patitioned the HDD but this wont work with the installer.  

    => The soulution was to install my Old XG Version and updated it to the newest. Now it is working. 

     

    But the shedulded Backups (which was created from my virtual appliance) did not work. :(

    Mario,

    You're welcome. Im glad you were able to find a solution. I don't assume people have virtualized copies at home, so I don't often the think to recommend using them for recovery.

    In the XG Firewall, you have now, have you tried rebooting that instance to factory default?   Go to System > Backup & Firmware > Firmware.  Click on the blue "gear" icon on the far left of the most recent Firmware version you wish to redeploy.

    This will install a fresh, new firewall for you, so you don't have to reuse this former copy in which you don't remember what settings you changed previously.

    This should also fix the Backup issue as it will create a new back area on the drive in your firewall appliance.
