Linux version to choose when installing on VMware?

I've just seen they offer a VMware Image (ZIP)

if you register for a free Trial they offer to download vms for VMware, HyperV, etc.

i didn't download it but if it is not called iso like the explicit .iso file for intel hw it may contains a VM not an VM install iso.

you can give it a try.

To be clear:

These are the business class versions with 30-day trials.  You will need a license from Sophos to unlock them after 30 days.

They are not the Home version found in Free Tools: www.sophos.com/.../sophos-xg-firewall-home-edition.aspx

Thanks, David.  I have loaded UTM ISOs into VMware Player for years, so you and Lukas seem to be confirming that the VMware drivers and tools are not a part of the XG ISO.

As a Gold Solution Partner, we get a free, full license that's "Not for Resale," so I specifically wanted the business class version.

The link that Ina provided: https://secure2.sophos.com/en-us/products/next-gen-firewall/free-trial.aspx are the business/enterprise class versions. Your license should work in them.

I was just making sure you understood that there is also a free Home version which is a business/enterprise class version locked in a perpetual trial mode.  This versions does not come in a virtual machine, but you could put it in one.

If you want/need the VMWare tools, you have to download them separately at VMWare: https://my.vmware.com/web/vmware/details?productId=491&downloadGroup=VMTOOLS1000

Interesting, Ian - apparently, I am!  Now, if I can just figure out how to get XG into VMware Player so I can play with it a bit.  Or, do you think it's not necessary to wait for V18?

Hi Bob,

I think you need to jump in up to your waist at this stage, waiting until V18 you miss all the fun with the MR updates and the issues that arise. Your networking/security expertise is needed in this forum as well as the UTM forum even more so with Luk off working on his new home.

This version will give you insight into what the XG product can develop into.

Side question, when did Sophos buy Astaro, my records show around early 2012 which seems a long time ago?

OK, Ian, I guess it's worth setting up a lab box since I can't find a way to get it to work in VMware Player.

I think it was near the middle of 2013 when we first saw Sophos branding, but it was actually two years earlier that the acquisition was finalized: https://www.sophos.com/en-us/press-office/astaro/default.aspx

Thank you, further back than I thought.

If you do build your self a test box on a vm, make sure you give it lots of cpu cycles.
