v17.0.2 MR2 & MR3 - SMTP Quarantine empty, unable to release quarantine E-Mails

After upgrading from MR1 to MR2, it seems that the SMTP Quarantine page is empty - it was properly working with MR1.
(The XG is in MTA mode)

I do see blocked/quarantine mail entries in the Mail log menu, but the Quarantine page stays empty.

Can someone confirm this ?

  • Strange....

I set up the FW with MR2 new from scratch, restored the backup - and got the same result... the SMTP quarantine page stays empty.
    No idea why.

  • Happy new year and a good start into 2018 !!!

I want to update this thread, as I still struggle with this issue.

After MR3 was out, I upgraded to this newest version, but the behavior of the empty SMTP quarantine page was still the same.
So I decided yesterday to give a last try and set up the FW from scratch again with MR3 and restored the backup - still the same !

I opened now a ticket @ Sophos as it is very annoying to have quarantined E-Mails which I can not release...

Am I really the only one with this problem ?

  • Mails are found in CLI in the Folder /var/quarantine/*. Are there found any files in there in your Case?

  • Hoi Christian

Yes, there are currently 50 files stored.
The path to the files is: /var/quarantine/QBin.1/

"ls /var/quarantine/*" shows the 50 files, like:

    0xc0000007.eml_0_1514841054
    0xc0000434.eml_0_1514884401

    SFVH_SO01_SFOS 17.0.3 MR-3# cd /var/quarantine/QBin.1/
    SFVH_SO01_SFOS 17.0.3 MR-3# ls | wc -l
    50

seems that the spam file repository is working fine, but the tracking routine to show those in the GUI not...

  • I migrated just now from MR2 to MR3. My old Quarantine Mails are still accessible from the GUI. So this issue seems to be something specific to your XG Installation.

I'd recommend to create a supportcase at sophos to get some more investigation into this.

Meantime if you need any specific mails, you can copy them via Shell to a FTP-Server using ftpput, and from there to a Windows system for further handling.

  • Soooo... finally solved.

After contacting Sophos with a support case ticket - which was denied as I am a private user with an Eval license - I took the time and set up the Firewall (again) new from scratch, but this time not with restore the backup file, but configure the whole device manually again.

=> Voila, this solved the problem.

It seems that something in the configuration restore file was producing the problem, no idea why.
But after spending hours and hours with troubleshooting, I'm happy that all is finally working again.
