Another firmware not loading issue

Sophos XG Software appliance installation issue

Qotom N3150 8GB mem 64Gb SSD 4xUSB3 2xUSB2 and 2 x RJ45 etherent ports (Non Intel) (Have run Sophos UTM successfully on this hardware)

I am trying to set up Sophos XG 17.0 loading via USB2

I have transferred the ISO image onto the USB2 stick using Rufus 2.17 and have no issues with the initial load. Initially loads fine from a USB2 stick in a USB2 port in the Qotom ( I have read that USB3 may have issues)

I fall fowl of the No Firmware loaded message.   I have tired the loading via Ethernet ports after I obtained the Firmware from  from MySophos under the  Networks section. (version 17.pgp)  Tried several browsers all appear to transfer the F/w in about 2 to 3 seconds. It then takes a couple of minutes to inform me its failed. Life is too short to try the serial port upload regardless I have no serial connections on my home PC's.

Latterly I have loaded the f/w onto the USB2 stick I am using to image the XG. Taking the SFloader advanced diagnostics I can get to a shell prompt. I note the warning abandon all hope yea who play with this, you will be on your own .......  I understand that but am out of other options.   I want to copy the f/w from the USB2 (I have to mount it) onto the correct location  on my SSD and then boot and see if its recognised. However as there is no prior F/w on the SSD i can not work out where to copy the firmware to.

Where should I copy the Firmware  to on the SSD ?

  • Hi,

I am nit sure I understand your question. Are you saying you have XG already installed and running on the qotom?

If so, I suspect you are trying to load the v17 upgrade using the wrong menu or are using the wrong version.

From memory you cannot load firmware upgrades via USB sticks.

When performing the initial Install from a USB, it gets to a point where it starts to load the firmware and it fails. Taking the option to reboot, it reloads from the SDD and enters the SFLoader menu. From  there are options to load the firmware either via a serial connection or via the Lan ports. When I opt for the LAN ports it takes a DHCP address which I use to connect to, from a browser. The browser then asks for the name of the Firmware to transfer to the Sophos XG on the Qotom. The transfer takes about 2 - 3 seconds however this fails for both firmware versions 16 and 17.

I have been through all the knowledge articles I can find,  but none of the previous workarounds / fixes work for me.

Again within the SFLoader menu there is an advanced  option to a basic shell. So as a last resort I wondered if I can mount a usb drive and then cp the firmware onto the SSD disk. However as no firmware already exists on the SSD I cant "guess" where to cp the firmware to. I have been stuck at this point for almost a week now.

Overnight I have wondered about TFTP or FTP servers running on my Win10 PC to see if the Sophos SLloader can request a copy of the Firmware as opposed to pushing a copy of the Firmware via the several browsers I have tried.

If I cant work this out before the weekend is over,  I will opt for a different software appliance, which is a shame as I like the effectiveness, look and feel of Sophos Firewalls.

  • Hi Don,

which version are you trying to load? There is another option, to put the SSD into another device and load the software then move it back to the Qotom.

I am using the  software appliance version 17.x  It was the only version that was stand alone. I dont really want to  get into Virtualisation as that adds another layer of complexity. I am from the KISS fraternity. Keep It So Simple. i.e less to go wrong easier to fix, normally better performance as well.

I am loathe to start pulling things apart although fully competent in that field.  However loading an image onto an external SSD via USB attach is another option, however need to work out how I would do that without overwriting the system drive in whatever device I use.

As always more questions than answers.

  • As yet I have not cracked this issue. I suspect the installation script is not creating the required partitions correctly and nothing I can do will fix that. No issues at all with the non Itel NIC's.

Will wait for the next version as I can not locate an official prior version to test if that will install, with a view to performing an  upgrade to current.

I have now looked at most other Linux style Firewalls , some more popular that others. Presently I have settled on Untangle. Its not perfect, but it fits in with my requirements.
