What is the difference between UTM and XG?

What is the difference between XG and UTM? Chat support is telling me that XG is software based and UTM requires a dedicated machine. This makes no sense to me for a couple reasons. First, aren't they both software based? Second, can't they both be installed on a dedicated machine? I have watched installation videos for both and the process appears to be completely identical. So, what is the major difference between the two other than one having a limitation of 50 IP addresses and the other limiting the amount of RAM and Cores? Which would you recommend for someone coming to Sophos as a new user? The hardware I plan to install it on is basically consumer grade. I am using the new Intel Pentium Kaby Lake 4600 processor, 8GB DDR4 RAM, a motherboard with built in Intel Ethernet, a 4 Port Intel 1000/Pro extension card, and an SSD. I will also be using a TP-Link wireless access point and a Netgear managed switch for setting up vlans.

    They are products from different legacy companies as I understand it, with UTM being from a former company called Astaro and XG being from a former company named Cyberoam.  I can tell you that the people who come from the UTM background don't typically like XG due to a perceived feature and quality gap.  From my standpoint, while I think there is still some amount of feature gap between the two, I don't believe there is much of a quality gap anymore. 

    I'm a customer, not a reseller or partner.  I would recommend XG to anyone unless the UTM does something specific they need that the XG doesn't.  At the moment, from what I read here, it sounds like UTM does e-mail better, reporting and logging better, and some other things here and there.  That's my 2 cents worth.

    Thanks for the reply Bill. I have searched for the same answer and most of the responses I am seeing are from a year ago. As I understand it, XG v16 was a huge upgrade that closed a lot of feature gaps. Furthermore, version 17 appears to be closing even more gaps. So at this point I wonder if there are other features besides the ones you mentioned that exist in UTM but not XG. I am curious why the recommendation to go with XG if UTM still has more features and does certain things better? Is XG supposed to be a replacement for UTM moving forward? If so that would be a compelling reason. If they do plan to continue development on both I am still confused about why they have two different offerings that appear to do mostly the same thing. The only reason I can think of is that one is legacy and they are planning to phase it out once they migrate their current customer base over to the newer version (XG).

    test both boxes because XG lacks on some feaures that may not fit your needs.
