Scan HTTP and Scan FTP is checked.

I shortly ran Sophos 17 Beta (went back to 16 due to too many bugs), in the short time I ran beta I saw things like Facebook, Google Talk and so on, each on seperate lines. But in 16 everything it categorised as Other Application

you are not using Decrypt and scan...

Most applications are running on https protocol, so you will not see most of them. On v17, they made some improvements but decrypt and scan should be turned on in order to see all Applications.

I run same settings on that part on 16 as I did on 17 beta, so I'd expect to see similar results.

I don't have HTTPS scan enabled as it causes bad certificate warnings to the clients.

for best catch level, decrypt and scan must be turned on. If you do not want to enable decrypt and scan, wait for v17 GA.
