QoS Youtube Application and Website

Hi Sophos Community, Engineer and Architects

Good day

I am familiar with Sophos SG

I am a little bit confuse how to apply QoS with specific application specially youtube thru web browser and application.

Let say we have 50Mbps,  I want to allocate 10Mbps on youtube only.

How can I make it possible?

Gracias :)

  • Hi kunkka ,

You may create a QOS policy of 10mbps i.e. 1280KBps of value and apply on the application you wish to control. Additionally, to apply this QOS on application filter you may need to enable QOS for Application filter on the firewall rule as per the screen shot.

  • Just wanted to add that this works fine for all browsers except Chrome. Even with QUIC blocked, youtube still streams at full speed for chrome browsers.

  • Mihira,

The issue with QoS not working for YouTube in Chrome is a know issue. I reported this to Sophos back in April. I was told it would not be fixed until V17. I have not tried it on my firewall at home running V17 beta yet. Bug ID is NC-19569 in case you need it.

  • There was a problem with HTTPS applications not always being identified and therefore not having QoS applied, in NC-19569, and I can confirm that it is fixed in v17.

However there is no known issues (that Dev is aware of) where QoS worked in some browsers and not in others.  If there is a specific Youtube-in-Chrome only issue, we are not aware of it and it is therefore probably not resolved in v17.

  • Michael,

We only saw it on Chrome, but that is what 99% of our users have so we did not do a lot of testing in others browsers. Maybe we got lucky when it was working in the other browsers. That is somewhat strange though about what your saying with HTTPS. When our case was finally escalated to DEV, our firewall saw the application under "Live Connections" but didn't apply the QoS to it.

  • The issue that we resolved in v17 had to do with us not detecting the application after the system has been running for awhile.  I think that it would match what you saw.

If you really want to confirm, reboot the v16.5 box.  If it works for a while, and then stops working then that is the same issue as we fixed in v17.

Regardless, if anyone has it not working in v17, let us know in this thread.
