Sophos XG Home

With all the talk of v17 I was wondering what features are the home users going to be able to take advantage of? A few that would be nice would be:

  • Sandstorm
  • Endpoint Synchronization (macOS and Windows)
  • Security Heartbeat (I think this is what Endpoint Synchronizationis in v17)

The above are just to name a few. I have done some searching and there does not appear to be any pricing options for home users. The Sophos community of home users has shown how we can help Sophos identify issues in these forums and provide input/feedback.

I am very happy that Sophos removed the IP limit and instituted cpu/mem limits instead on XG because these days a family of 5 can easily push over the limits of UTM9.x

Being someone who deals with Cyber Security in my day job I practice what I preach and try as much as humanly possible to keep a secure home network for both my family and I. No one wants to spend there off time from their day job cleaning up something on their home network that could have been avoided by having defense in depth.

I do not think I am alone in saying that their might be a market for home users for subscription of the features mentioned above.

I appreciate any feedback. Stay safe, stay secure.

  • Hi Ron,

this is an ongoing question. The usual answer is that the management from the Sophos end is not economical and takes away the incentive for business to buy the products so in the end Sophos end up loosing.

  • Ian,

Thank you for replying. The origin of my post was from seeing a 30 minute video on youtube of the features coming in v17 and shaking my head that sophos does not offer any of the endpoint features for home users.

I see plenty of cases every day in my day job where something appears on a network because the patient zero's machine took the machine home and put on their home network and it was infected due to the lack of protection on the home network.

  • Hi Ron,

you and I both have have reasonable secure home networks. I used to work in IT (user and network support for clothing company). The issue being that very few other people do. I offered one to my sons for each of their flats, but making sure that they could play their games became too difficult for them and in the end they use the ISPs hardware. A friend was given one, but again management was too difficult and he is a manager in the IT world.

With the UTM you get a free 10 end point user management licence.

The other issue is users with laptops go to do product demonstrations using the wifi/phone to provide insecure internet connection.

I don't want to come across as negative, just realistic. When I travel I used to take a portable unit to use with a 3/4g network, but can't do that overseas or take advantage of the free wifi at the hotels.
